It's official: Even our friendliest allies are treating us like we've turned into a third-world nation.
Girl Guides of Canada is cancelling any trips to the United States, citing concerns that some members could be turned away at the border.
“It also has to do with safety,” Sarah Kiriliuk, the organization’s national manager of marketing and communication, said Monday. “We want to make sure that if our girls are travelling that they are not going to be in a risky or unsafe situation. . . . We can’t leave a girl behind.”
Girl Guides is a Canadian equivalent of the Girl Scouts. They're canceling trips to the United States because of the uncertainty over whether border agents would let the girls in or, sigh, detain ones that are themselves immigrants, or of the Muslim faith, because our sitting president and his ruling party are frothing xenophobic nutjobs who have directed our border agents to do things like that. So now Canadian clubs that include non-white, non-Christian members (because Of Freaking Course They Do) are being forced to cancel their plans rather than risk traumatizing those children at our border.
Good work, Republicans. Your raging racism has in just a few short weeks turned our country into a place that's considered unsafe for children to visit. Refresh our memories: has the Republican speaker of the House piped up in opposition to any of that racism yet? What about the Senate? No? This is all going according to plan, then?
