Presdent Trump’s Supreme Court nominee just refused to ask the anonymous rightwing donors who have contributed $10 million in advertising on his behalf to reveal themselves.
Judicial Crisis Network spent at minimum $7 million to prevent President Obama’s nominee from receiving a confirmation hearing and is currently spending $10 million to confirm Neil Gorsuch.
“We have this ten million dollars that is being spent on behalf of your confirmation,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse during Gorsuch’s confirmation hearing today. “Do you think for instance that we on this panel ought to know who is behind that?”
“Senator, that is a policy question for this body,” Gorsuch replied.
“Well, it’s also a matter of disclosure,” Whitehouse countered. ““You could ask right now as a matter of courtesy, as a matter of respect for the process that anybody funding this should declare themselves right now so we can evaluate who is behind this effort.”
Gorsuch said that he was not “going to get involved in politics,” a common refrain of his during the hearings, as he tried to paint himself as being above partisan loyalties.
His dogged refusal to reveal his personal beliefs on any issues have frustrated those attempting to determine what his impact will be on the courts.
“If you want to have more disclosure,” Gorsuch said. “Pass a law.”
