Is Citizens United scamming senior citizens with dementia?

Citizens United is, by definition, scum. But this is a special form of sleazy behavior from them. When a relative with dementia was hospitalized, Jennifer Bell had the woman’s mail forwarded to herself, and started receiving up to five Citizens United mailers a week. Here’s the worst of it:

One mail piece, which had [current Trump deputy campaign manager David] Bossie’s name on it, said the relative had sent Citizens United a $50 check which was lost in the mail.

“I am writing this letter to ask for your forgiveness and understanding with a recent mix-up with the Post Office,” Bossie wrote. “As a result, we were unable to receive your $50 donation.”
“Citizens United was the victim of a clerical mistake that temporarily decreased our ability to receive all of our mail,” the letter continues. “I would say I am shocked but what do you expect from a government run organization!”

Then comes the kicker:

“If you can see it in your heart to re-send your $50 in the included postage-provided envelope it would be a blessing to us,” the letter concludes.

The hospitalized woman’s family had taken away her checkbook, so they knew she hadn’t actually sent a check. And if the check didn’t arrive, how did Citizens United know it got lost? Bell thinks the group may be intentionally crafting its message to scam people with dementia, counting on them to believe that they did intend to send $50 and writing a check to replace the one that was “lost.” If even a few people do that regularly, Citizens United can pay for a bunch more mailers.

These people are just creeps.
