From Robert Reich
An estimated 47 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over this long holiday weekend -- the most travelers since 2007. Among the major reasons: the cheapest gas for this time of year since 2008.
Airlines also have the cheapest fuel costs in many years – their biggest single expense. Salaries of flight attendants, pilots, and mechanics are also lower than they were ten years ago, adjusted for inflation. So why aren’t airline ticket prices any lower? Answer: Because over the last 10 years we’ve gone from 9 major airlines to just 4. And over many routes, there are now just one or two. Which allows them to collude on prices. This is yet another redistribution upward from average people to big corporations, their top executives, and major shareholders. Why don’t the antitrust authorities go after airline collusion? Answer: Because antitrust law is no longer enforced. Why not? Because the Republican Congress hasn’t appropriated enough money to enforce antitrust law.
Safe travels.
