The IRS is the last remaining watchdog over the remnants of our tattered system for limiting big money in politics. The agency is supposed to ensure that non-profit entities – which, because of their non-profit status, don’t have to disclose donors – are not simply political front groups disguising themselves as “social welfare” organizations in order to keep their donors secret.
But today the Center for Responsive Politics reports that the IRS has granted “social welfare” status to Karl Rove’s “Crossroads GPS.” This is absurd. Since 2010, Crossroads GPS has spent tens of millions of secret dollars on campaign ads to elect Republicans to Congress. If Crossroads GPS is a “social welfare” organization, Ted Cruz is a socialist. Obviously, the IRS has been so intimidated by congressional Republicans that it will now let any political front group claim “social welfare” status in order to hide political funders.
The IRS has abdicated its responsibility. The only way we get big money out of politics is with fundamental reform -- full disclosure of all sources of funding, public financing of elections, an end to the revolving door, and reversal of "Citizens United."
