There are two types of marriage

When it comes to marriage, there is the civil portion, a contractual obligation by two people to share their lives and their livelihood - and there is the religious attachment to the process. The Christian religion connected with the civil process by making marriage a sacrament within the church, a process actually post-dating the civil version of marriage. The obligation seen from within the church is designed to keep people closer to the church and to encourage them to indoctrinate any offspring into the church's way of life.

From the standpoint of the church, marriage is a lot about procreation and carrying on the church traditions. The churches do not have to grant marriage rights to gay people, but because of the civil rights issue, I suppose the government is bound to provide the same protections and legal rights to all people; civil marriages should be a right.
