It's still the war between the states

It amazes me that the southern states here in the US still maintain such a different philosophy about the direction in which the nation should progress. With all of the population shift toward the southern climate and the mass movement of business in that direction in the years since the 1950's, it amazes me that the attitudes haven't blended more completely. The Southern State anti-federal-government position seems incongruous. Clearly, a lot of the folks drawn to the south have been easily assimilated into that separatist mentality. Interesting.
