Conservatives feed on fear
Conservatives live in a corner of their mind where fear and boogeymen reside, where everything that exists in the world is something to protect themselves from. Change is the most difficult thing to abide - they have adjusted to what already exists, but if something new pops up into their environment it means they have to adjust all of their preservation strategies and they don't have many coping skills to accomplish that with. Fear and hate rule their lives. Background checks to buy a new gun? There can only be one reason for the government to do this to them - to keep them from protecting themselves from the evils that lurk in their world.
