The Bible tells us that God said rape is okay, as long as you pay the victim's father a few dollars. Interesting thoughts from a God who loves us all. Seems to me I see a little contradiction in there.
You CAN own slaves - the Bible says God said it was okay. No wonder so many in the southern US are still mad at the Federal Government - they want their slaves back!
There were a few things God didn't create, but it's only things the religious people don't like. Amazing coincidence how that worked out.
For those who don't understand the world, or even understand that they don't know it all, there's God.
I'm not sure what Jon means by "given people hope" when all I see is religious people using their religion to bash others.
We were in God's country and he didn't drop in to say, "Hi."
What was it he said about loving they neighbor? Oh, you forgot that part? Or you didn't know which neighbors he meant and you thought he only meant the ones on the corner of your street, not the ones on the next block?
This reminds me of a minister in the church in which I was raised who told us one Sunday, in a Bible study group following services, that he owned some apartments, but he wouldn't rent them to black people because they were dirty and untrustworthy. Doing the Lord's work.
Some things in the Bible clearly show that it was written by people with less of a knowledge about the universe than we have now. Does that make sense if they were divinely inspired?
It seems as if a large part of religion these days is the abuse of people that are a little more vulnerable than the believer.
