This is intriguing...
Yesterday I ran across a post in the J-Walk blog that I enjoyed and had marked to reference here. In it, John Walkenbach pointed to the recent release of a tape by the Pentagon (US Navy?) in which some speed boats had approached some US Navy warships over in the Gulf of Hormuz, sped around and around, and threatened, via radio, to blow up the Navy ships. As a follow-up, John then pointed out that Iran had released some of their own video of the incident and said that this harassment of US ships never involved them.
Walkenbach's point was that he wasn't sure who to believe - in fact, he pointed out that we've been lied to so many times by the Bush administration that he no longer felt safe in assuming the word of the US was any more valuable than that of the Iranians.
I felt sad about John's observation, but I had to agree with him - I no longer trust my own government to tell me the truth if there is some possible way in which they can bend information to fit their own personal, politically charged view of the world.
Now this - in today's Progress Report (dated 1/11/2008), it is noted that the Pentagon is now admitting that they really have no proof that Iran was responsible for the boats and the warnings that came over the radio. In fact, the voice heard by the navy actually had no Iranian accent and did not, ever, indicate that they were Iranian.
Good call, John. You saw it coming.
And on top of it all, President Bush had already used the incident to, once again, threaten Iran.
Damn - how did this great nation ever get stuck with a complete idiot as President who has surrounded himself with complete idiots and paranoids?
