Republicans are messed up in the head.

From Daily Kos and ABC News
(Click on the link to read more of the interview)

House Speaker John Boehner is focused like a laser on jobs:

STEPHANOPOULOS: You know, we asked-- our viewers for questions for you. And so many came in on the same exact theme. Where are the jobs? What is this Congress doing for jobs?

BOEHNER: Well, that's interesting, George. Because it really is our number one priority.

And as if to prove the speaker's point, yesterday House Republicans announced they would vote next week on this crucial job creating measure:

The House will vote next week on a bill banning abortions across the country after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Liberals Beware!

I have come to the conclusion that ignorance and stupidity are contagious. When people start watching Fox News and hanging out with other conservatives, the idiocy seems to spread and even fall to depths that one could never have imagined. Liberals, don't get too close to conservatives - the stupid seems to be spreading.

Republicans have vivid imaginations and utilize that skill to feed their fears.

The next Republican Presidential candidate -

- same as the last? They just can't help but tell lies - it is why they are Republicans.

From Crooks and Liars...

------------Ted Cruz (T-TX) calls himself a Southern Baptist, so he should know the Ninth Commandment.

A full 54 percent of Ted Cruz's statements have been rated "false" or "pants on fire" by PolitiFact. Another 20 percent are only "half true." That's 74 percent of Cruz's statements failing the truth test.

We're used to politicians lying to us, of course. But the frequency of Cruz's lies is actually staggering. Compare Cruz's 74 percent lying rate with Rick Perry's 48 percent and John Cornyn's 56 percent. Cruz is in rarefied air with Michele Bachmann as one of this country's biggest political liars. Whenever Ted Cruz opens his mouth, there's a 3/4 chance he's lying.

Cruz, you may remember, says he has a secret list of communists at Harvard Law School, and bravely exposed a Democratic plot to shutter Catholic charities and hospitals.

Republican condemnation

The Republicans lie almost all of the time any more. We all know they do it. Still, the depths to which they sink were almost unthought of 20 years ago.

Republican morality is in the toilet

I'm trotting out an old friend of mine again today...

Written by Christ Hedges for Truthdig.

"Those who retreat into fantasy cannot be engaged in rational discussion, for fantasy is all that is left of their tattered self-esteem. When their myths are attacked as untrue it triggers not a discussion of facts and evidence but a ferocious emotional backlash."

The reason Republicans re-direct your attention on issues and lie about things is they have no where else to turn in defense of their beliefs. There's no good reason to hate Obama other than race; there's no good reason to harp on Benghazi except for their hate of the black man in the white house; there is no good reason to continue to harp on cutting social security other than the fact that it is a favored program of the Kenyan Muslim haunting their dreams. Facts and reason are the friends of the enlightened and the liberals and conservatives thrive on fear and hate.

The lies surrounding our benefits programs

From the Political Carnival

The five biggest lies about "entitlement" (ahem, earned benefits) programs
from The Political Carnival by GottaLaff

My Twitter pal Michael Hiltzik does it again. In his newest L.A. Times column, he dissects the five biggest lies about Social Security and Medicare, pointing out that the truth seems to elude far too many people who have big microphones.

Hiltzik first states a fact that everyone should know, but right wing talking points have obliterated: that the very word "entitlement" is a lie, saying "Social Security and Medicare got that name because workers became 'entitled' to those benefits by paying into the system. In recent years, however, the term has become distorted to signify benefits people are entitled to without earning them."

Glad we got that out of the way, because it drives me nuts.

Now on to the lies. He begins with the January 1 change in the Social Security payroll tax, which lowered the average household income by about $80 a month. Lie No. 1: The payroll tax hike is killing the retail economy:

Blaming the payroll tax, however, ignores the whole story. First, on Jan. 1 the tax wasn't hiked; it was restored to its 2010 level, after a two-year "holiday"… But the holiday was always a wretched idea, in part because of what everyone knew would happen when the old rate reappeared -people treated it as a pay cut…. The payroll tax break, by contrast, went only to those who pay into Social Security. So it left out 5.7 million state and local workers (mostly teachers).

Then on to the second whopper, Lie No. 2: "Entitlement" benefits for millionaires and billionaires are a costly problem:

The lie here is the assertion that a significant portion of benefits goes to multimillionaires. In fact, their share of benefits is minuscule. That's because there aren't very many of them, and they don't get more than the maximum old-age benefit… They account for about 14 hundredths of one percent of all Social Security outlays.

Lie No. 3: Social Security and Medicare are $60 trillion in the hole:

It's a calculation of funding gaps projected out to the limitless future and then converted to present value - meaning what the cost would be if we had to pay it all today.

Lie No. 4: You're paying too much (or too little) for your benefits:

This is a double-barreled lie, based on the misconception that Social Security and Medicare are retirement funds. They're not; they're insurance programs. What you recover depends on your personal circumstances, but the point is they're there when you need them.

Lie No. 5: Medicare, Social Security - it's all the same:

It's misleading to lump these two programs together as if they have the same issues amenable to the same solutions.

Dealing in facts

When considering the plight of the American political scene, it is far more constructive to work from facts than to work from emotion.  The Republicans continue to scream that Obama and the Democrats have been "tax and spend" liberals and that they are increasing the deficit at exponential rates. It is simply not true.

It seems to me that we could do a lot to improve political discourse in this country if we passed laws to make it illegal to tell lies on television and to strengthen liable and slander laws to cover even politicians. It might make our politics a whole lot more civil.

Reason

To people of reason, Republican political platforms make absolutely no sense.

Prayer in schools, etc.

As is so often the case, the conservatives mislead everyone by lying about the facts. They distort, twist, bend, shorten, and manipulate the truth in order to scare you into their way of thinking.

Have you ever tried to argue with one of them? I have - on a number of occasions - and what makes it so difficult is when they pull this on you without giving you any time to refute. So, you're in the middle of this conversation on climate change and a big lie comes up - "78 percent of scientists agree that global warming is not real because polar bears." And you sit there stunned. This flies in the face of anything YOU'VE ever heard, but you can't recall the facts or the source - what did you read last week? So you avoid the issue - you talk around it - score one for the idiot.

By the time you can get to computer and check the facts, it's too late to argue. They make you feel foolish with their nonsensical made-up facts. And so you avoid the discussion. AND, if by some miracle, they broach a topic you ARE familiar with, they start getting louder and shout you down. They are VERY good at defending their ignorance, trust me on that. I've seen it many times.

You can't fix stupid because stupid to them feels right.

Do they not understand?

Do they not understand that we can see their lips moving and hear the lies they are telling?

Honeywell CEO David Cote made news recently by calling for corporations to pay zero taxesin the United States, something he claims would boost the creation of jobs. But Honeywell has paid an effective tax rate of 2 percent in the last four years and cut 1,000 jobs in the U.S. during that time.

What the hell is she talking about?

Notice anything missing from this image? Like facts? Information? A fucking clue as to what she's talking about? I'm a progressive and am disappointed with Obama, but I have no clue about her gripe here - can you offer me some help?

20 Lies (and counting) as told by Gov. Walker of Wisonsin

Russ' Filtered News examines some of the lies told by Wisconsin's Governor Walker and provides links to resource materials authenticating the claims.  One of my favorites...

Walker: Public employees are more richly compensated than their public sector counterparts.

The truth: According to the Economic Policy Institute, wages and salaries of state and local employees are lower than those for private sector employees with comparable earnings determinants such as education and work experience. State workers typically are under-compensated by 8.2% in Wisconsin.

TSA lied: naked-scanners can store and transmit images
from Boing Boing by Cory Doctorow

You know those airport scanners that can see through your clothes, offering an intimate look at your junk and your lovehandles and every other part of you that you keep between you, your spouse, your doctor and the bathroom mirror? You know how the TSA swore up and down that these machines didn't store and couldn't transmit the compromising photos of your buck-naked self?

They lied.

...

Just more US government employees doing Al Qaeda's business: undermining the quality of life in the "free" world. Osama's still free, how about you?

This is a little bit dated...

...but Joe Wilson's apology for shouting out, "You lied!" to President Obama on the floor of the U.S. Congress may deserve a second look (with closed captioning for the hard of listening.)

Following the Republicans

Andrew Sullivan, writing for The Atlantic, has put together a rather exhaustive list of the lies of Sarah Palin. Below is a small taste - click on Andrew's name above to see the original article.

Palin lied when she said the dismissal of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, had nothing to do with his refusal to fire state trooper Mike Wooten; in fact, the Branchflower Report concluded that she repeatedly abused her power when dealing with both men.

Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed to have said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere; in fact, she openly campaigned for the federal project when running for governor.

Palin lied when she denied that Wasilla's police chief and librarian had been fired; in fact, both were given letters of termination the previous day.

Palin lied when she wrote in the NYT that a comprehensive review by Alaska wildlife officials showed that polar bears were not endangered; in fact, email correspondence between those scientists showed the opposite.

Palin lied when she claimed in her convention speech that an oil gas pipeline "began" under her guidance; in fact, the pipeline was years from breaking ground, if at all.

Palin lied when she told Charlie Gibson that she does not pass judgment on gay people; in fact, she opposes all rights between gay spouses and belongs to a church that promotes conversion therapy.

The Conservative Agenda

One of the things that's so interesting to watch with conservatives and Republicans is their constant lament that the media is liberally biased. A big reason for their belief is that most members of the media seek out truth, not conservative lies. Conservatives have some trouble with the truth.

For evidence whereof I speak, watch this video all the way through - George Stephanopoulos lays bare the truth at the very end.
