Thousands of students across the country are walking out of school to protest Trump victory

Nathan Wellman | November 9, 2016

Hundreds of California students from both Bishop O’Dowd High School and Berkeley High School participated in a walkout from their schools today in protest of Donald Trump’s election to the presidency.

Students from Boulder High School in Colorado also participated, as well as Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Arizona.

The walkouts were documented on Periscope and other social media platforms. Students gave speeches, waved Mexican flags, spoke in Spanish, cried, and raised their fists in the air.

“Donald Trump may be president, but we are gong to make sure that this man, that he is going to prioritize the well being of the people, so please join us in this fight,” one student said in a speech.

“He wants us to turn against each other,” another female student said, choking back tears. “I just want to emphasize that as young people it’s our job to continue to fight like our parents fought for us.”

The school districts have not commented on these walkouts, but Berkeley High School posted pictures of the demonstrations on their Twitter account under the hashtags of “#GoJackets #BerkeleyHigh #BHSWalkOut.”

These walkouts followed protests which occurred last night all across the country, with mostly millennials burning Trump effigies and lighting fires in protest of the election results, in which Trump defeated Clinton in the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. More demonstrations were promised Wednesday night.

Walkouts against Trump also occurred last Tuesady, with Arizona students in North High School and Maryvale High School also staging walkouts to encourage voters not to vote for Trump or Sherriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently convicted of contempt-of-court after he refused to stop racially profiling Latino Americans. Arpaio was defeated by Democrat Paul Penzone by nearly ten percent.
