Last night in Dallas, at least one sniper, who said he wanted to shoot white police officers, killed five officers and wounded seven others during a demonstration against recent police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana. The sniper was killed, and three other people are in custody.
Video recordings of the recent police shootings in Baton Rouge, La., and Falcon Heights, Minnesota, are graphic evidence -- as if we needed it -- of the differences in how police and the criminal justice system treat blacks and whites in America. But obviously nothing excuses the violence and carnage in Dallas.
I don’t recall a period when the divisions in America have seemed so stark – black and white, Muslim and non-Muslim, foreign-born and native-born, Latino and non-Latino, gay and straight, conservative and liberal. It’s a fantasy to suppose we’ve ever been totally and effortlessly united, but I’m not sure why we’re so divided right now. Are the police more brutal? Have economic stresses made us angrier? Can we blame demagogues like Trump and the denizens of rightwing media? Is it the Internet, and easy transmission of violent images and hateful words?
