Chris Christie believes the American military should “fight back” somewhere overseas in response to a Queens-born American citizen shooting up a gay nightclub in Orlando last Sunday.
Though it remains unclear precisely to what extent radical Islam motivated suspected shooter Omar Mateen — a former classmate told the Palm Beach Post he believes Mateen was gay, while his ex-wife told the Washington Post he was emotionally troubled and not particularly religious — Christie believes the shooting was “all about” the fact that “radical Islamic terrorists are out to kill us.”
“If this country doesn’t get wise to that fact and our leaders don’t get wise to that fact… these people hate us because of who we are, and they’re going to try and kill us, and that’s what this is all about,” the New Jersey governor said during an appearance on WFAN radio. “It’s unacceptable to allow this kind of stuff in our country and for us not to fight back, and we need to fight back, and that’s all these people understand.”
Though every indication is that Mateen was the sole shooter, Christie went on to say “they went into that club because radical Islamic terrorists hate people who are gay and lesbian. We see that in Iran. They hang them from cranes in the middle of Tehran because of their sexual orientation. That’s not who America is, and we gotta fight back for those people and all of our other citizens.”
Pressed on where exactly he’d like to see the United States “fight back,” Christie didn’t offer any specifics.
“You gotta get over there and start making them pay where they live,” he said. “It’s an ugly and difficult thing but if we don’t get over there, they’re coming here, and they showed it again this weekend.”
