Volume was back up this week, even with the government shutdown distracting everybody from shooting themselves. A pretty routine week, really, which saw many of our observed trends continuing. Men continued accidentally shooting their girlfriends and wives, of course. And there were three incidents in which four homes were invaded by neighbors' freedom projectiles. Five cops were involved in GunFAIL incidents, four of which resulted in injuries, and one of which merely resulted in the theft of a department-owned AR-15. 

 

Four carriers shot themselves drawing their weapons from their pockets or waistbands, and two women shot themselves or others with guns that went off in their purses. Continuing a new trend, two more armed citizens accidentally fired their weapons while out shopping, one in a sporting goods store and one in a Winn Dixie supermarket. Four people came to realize (the hard way) that they were cleaning still-loaded weapons, two defensive gun users accidentally shot friends or family members, and two hunters shot themselves or their hunting partners.

It was another relatively good week for children as victims of GunFAIL, at least in terms of volume. Just four incidents were found, though the victims were quite young, aged 2, 4, 5 and 11.

Guns turning up in schools continues to be a problem, with weapons found this week in Mandeville, LA, Houston, TX, Sarasota Springs, FL, Tioga, ND, Odessa, TX, Kansas City, MO, and Omaha, NE.

One story of particular note this week: the termination hearing of Gilberton, PA police chief (and renowned gun nut) Mark Kessler was disrupted last week when one of his armed supporters loudly dropped a pistol from his holster, and sent it clattering onto the concrete floor as he stood directly behind Kessler and his attorney. That was too much for his lawyer, who insisted that the proceedings be postponed until they could reconvene somewhere else, under safer circumstances. Who could've guessed that bringing so many overexcited gun enthusiasts together in one place would result in such an embarrassing accident?

Below the fold, this week's list.

1. OHATCHEE, AL, 9/21/13: A 32-year-old Ohatchee woman died Wednesday from complications from a gunshot wound, the result of what authorities believe was an accidental shooting by her husband last month. The incident occurred Sept. 21 at the couple’s home on the 2100 block of Cochran Springs Road. Andria Romaine’s husband was reloading his .45-caliber pistol as he tried to solve a problem with new ammunition when the gun discharged, according to Calhoun County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Matt Wade. “We think it was just a tragic accident,” Wade said.
2. COTTAGE GROVE, WI, 9/22/13: Residents in the Heather Drive neighborhood had quite the scare on Sept. 22 when they found .223 caliber rifle bullets had struck their homes. Cottage Grove Police Chief Chris Hughes held a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, to inform concerned residents about the status of the department’s investigation into the incident, which is very similar to a July 4 incident when Jeffery and Lisa Baudhuin found a bullet had struck their home on 66 Heather Drive. On Sept. 22, a bullet had struck the home at 229 Heather Drive, owned by Andrew Eberhardt, and another struck the home at 217 Dentaria Drive, owned by David Watson. The shots more than likely were fired from a field west of Buckley Ridge Circle and northeast of the residential neighborhood. According to officer Kristina O’Dell, there were five adult males and one adult female target shooting in the field on Sunday. According to O’Dell’s report, the six people were shooting at three targets facing a large natural grade hill, and that the highest target was below the brim of the hill. Based on the trajectory of the bullets and the type of firearms the men were shooting with, Hughes said it is likely that the bullets found at the homes on Heather Drive and Dentaria Drive on Sept. 22 came from the group target shooting in the field. “We can’t say for sure it was them, but it’s a high probability,” Hughes said. “When the officers made contact, the guns were on a table and unloaded. [The individuals] fully admitted they were target shooting.” Hughes said it is possible for a bullet fired from a .223 rifle to travel up to two miles, if unhindered. “Given the right circumstances, given the right arc of the bullet, the bullets could be from them,” Hughes said.
3. MESQUITE, NV, 9/29/13: Weapon Offense: Sept. 29 - Officers responded to a residence on Belt Buckle Crossing, reference a weapons discharge in the backyard of the residence. Officers located a male at the residence, who said he had accidentally fired his handgun. After an investigation of the incident, the male was issued a citation.
4. COLLIERVILLE, TN, 10/01/13: Just days after Academy Sports opened its doors in Collierville, customers and employees heard a loud gunshot in the store. It wasn’t a robbery, but a customer whose silver Taurus .357 magnum revolver had accidentally fired. No one was injured. After watching the surveillance video, Collierville Police charged Fred C. Kuhl III with reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor. Kuhl, 37, will appear in Collierville criminal court on Oct. 22. The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. Oct. 1. “While pulling the firearm out of its holster Mr. Kuhl appeared to have his finger on the trigger,” the report says. When reached at his Collierville home, Kuhl declined to comment.
5. FLINT, MI, 10/04/13: A Flint man is in good condition after he was shot Friday, Oct. 6 [sic] while watching television inside his West Court Street home. Officers were called around 6:45 p.m. to the 4000 block of Court for shots fired and found the victim with a single gunshot wound to his left lower leg. Witnesses told police they saw three unidentified men firing shots from handguns at a fourth man in the area. The victim was struck by a bullet that entered his living room wall as he sat watching TV. The victim, who was taken to a local hospital and listed in good condition, is not believed to have been involved with the suspects shooting on the street.
6. GENEVA TOWNSHIP, OH, 10/04/13:  A 19-year-old Geneva Township man was killed late Friday night after an accidental shooting at his residence. Thomas W. Brandeberry was shot just before 11 p.m. by his close friend, Cory A. Wright, said Lt. Terry Moisio, of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department. Brandeberry was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. after having sustained a gun shot wound to the head, said Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office Investigator Rich Mongell. An autopsy was performed and confirmed the cause of death was from the gun shot, he said. Mongell said Brandeberry and Wright were in Brandeberry’s room Friday night when the incident occurred. “(Brandeberry’s) father heard a gun shot and ran into the room and found him on the floor,” he said. Mongell said Brandeberry’s father started CPR and 9-1-1 was called. He said supposedly the gun was being unloaded when it went off.
7. LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH, 10/04/13: Oxford police and the Butler County Sheriff's Office are looking for a rifle stolen from a police officer. According to an incident report, someone broke into an unmarked Oxford police cruiser at Officer Adam Price's home on Read Trail in Liberty Township. The thief took a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, two ammunition magazines for it, a laptop and a camera and lenses, all belonging to the Oxford Police Department, the report states. Butler County sheriff's deputies said the rifle was in its case in the backseat of Price's car. The thief broke the back window of the car to steal the items, the report stated. The theft occurred between midnight and 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 4.
8. HUNTSVILLE, AL, 10/05/13: Huntsville police responded to a 5-year-old child who had been shot in the hand around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Officers made contact at Huntsville Hospital East with the boy and his mother. Authorities said the gunshot wound was in the boy’s left hand. Police investigated the apartment in Mason Court where they said the shooting occurred. Police reported that the shooting appeared to be accidental and self-inflicted by the child. This investigation is ongoing, and no one has been arrested yet.
9. NIAGARA FALLS, NY, 10/05/13: Details are sketchy at this time, but the Niagara County Sheriff's Office confirms that there was an accidental shooting at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Saturday night. Because no criminal intent was involved, the shooting is being investigated by Department of Defense security personnel. The public information officer for the air base was unavailable for comment. The shooting happened some time around 7 p.m. The victim was taken to Erie County Medical Center, which is standard procedure in such cases, sheriff's deputies say. No word on the patient's name or condition at this time.
10. TUSCALOOSA, AL, 10/05/13: A Tuscaloosa man accidentally shot himself in the leg while shopping in a local store on Saturday after his holstered gun fell to the floor and fired, according to the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit. Investigators spoke with the victim who said that while shopping in a local store, a 25-caliber handgun that he had in his waist fell to the floor and fired. The victim stated that he had the weapon in a holster, according to Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit Commander Sgt. Dale Phillips. The projectile from the handgun struck the victim in the leg and traveled up to his hip. The projectile will have to be removed in surgery, according to Phillips. Police do not have information on the victim's condition. MORE: In case you're interested, it was a Winn Dixie.
11. HUBBARD CO., MN, 10/05/13: Two hunters both stood up at the same time in their boat in northern Minnesota, with one losing his balance and fatally shooting his partner over the weekend as they each took aim at the same target, authorities said Monday. Adam Poole, 23, of Nevis, Minn., died late Saturday afternoon on a river connecting 3rd and 4th Crow Wing Lakes, about 15 miles east of Park Rapids, according to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office. “They both stood up in the boat in an effort to shoot at a duck,” a statement from the Sheriff’s Office read. “The hunting partner lost his balance, and the shotgun he was carrying discharged. Poole was struck in the head and died from his injuries.” Authorities say they are treating the death strictly as an accident.
12. BATES TOWNSHIP, MI, 10/05/13: Deputies from the Iron County Sheriff's Office investigated an accidental shooting that took place at noon on Saturday near the Perch River, on Forest Road 2130, in Bates Township. Nicholas Kegley, 32, of Iron River, was cleaning a .22 caliber pistol while waiting in his vehicle for a friend. Kegley and friends had been camping and hunting together in northern Bates Township. Kegley told the deputies that the slide had been sticking on the pistol and he used the time waiting to clean the gun. While cleaning the pistol Kegley unintentionally chambered a live cartridge and discharged the firearm. The bullet struck Kegley in the upper left leg then lodged in the driver door of his vehicle.
13. LA HABRA, CA, 10/05/13: An off-duty La Habra police officer was shot with his own weapon early Saturday during a fight after a traffic accident on the 5 Freeway in Castaic, authorities said. The shooting is under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which said the officer's injuries were not life threatening. The incident occurred near Templin Highway at 5:15 a.m., when the officer was involved in a traffic collision. During a subsequent struggle, the other driver used the officer's handgun to shoot him, according to the Sheriff's Department. The gun has not been recovered, and no description of the suspect or his vehicle was released.
14. WAYNE CITY, IL, 10/06/13: Sadness and shock is present in a Southern Illinois community after an accidental shooting over the weekend. Counselors were on hand on Monday for students and staff at Wayne City High School after the loss of 18-year-old Christian Marvel. Marvel was a senior at Wayne City High School. Marvel was at his house with a friend on Sunday evening when his friend accidentally shot and killed him. According to police the friend, who isn't being identified, was handling a semi-automatic handgun that was believed to not have been loaded, but there was one bullet in the chamber. The Wayne County Coroner pronounced Marvel dead at the scene.
15. ELMA, WA, 10/06/13: A Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officer saved a man’s life after he shot himself in the leg. Officer Mark James was in a remote area south of Elma when he saw a man shoot out of a window with a pistol at a grouse. WDFW Sgt. Matt Nixon said that when the elderly man saw the officer, he began to unload the gun inside of his vehicle, and that is when the .22 caliber black powder pistol went off and he shot himself in the leg. Officer James recently went through military training to treat gunshot wounds and was able to apply a tourniquet to the man’s leg to stop the bleeding. Nixon praised Officer James for his actions, saying, “I’m really proud of Mark. If he was not there, the man likely would not have survived.” While it is muzzleloader season and shooting grouse is legal, shooting while inside of a vehicle is illegal in the state. Nixon said that this accident shows why that law exists. Inside the vehicle were other loaded weapons. Charges are planned against the elderly man.
16. SALEM TOWNSHIP, OH, 10/06/13: A man shot himself in the finger while cleaning a gun Sunday night, according to an Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office report. The report said a deputy was called to Magruder Hospital about 10:45 p.m. for a gunshot report. The man told the deputy he had been cleaning a Ruger 10/22 rifle but had not checked to see if the firearm was unloaded. While using his left hand to hold the rifle steady as he cleaned it, he discharged the gun, sending a bullet through the the middle knuckle on his left index finger. The bullet went through the finger and into a beam in the ceiling, the report said.
17. MANASSAS, VA, 10/06/13: A Virginia mother was shot in the leg while watching her son's soccer game. She didn't even hear the gunshot. While sitting with her daughter and husband watching her 11-year-old son play soccer at the George Hellwig Memorial Park in Manassas Sunday evening, Melissa Jaramillo felt a sudden stab of pain. Jaramillo's husband happens to be an emergency medical technician, and after looking at the wound, he decided she may have been shot by a BB gun. It turns out that it was a small caliber bullet, possibly a .22 caliber round. No one heard a gunshot, and Prince William County police say no one at the game reported seeing anything out of the ordinary.
18. FREDERICKSBURG, VA, 10/06/13: The mother of a four-year-old boy was arrested after the child shot himself in the hand, according to a police report. “The preliminary investigation indicates that the child victim and his 8-year-old brother were visiting their mother at her apartment when the shooting occurred,” Fredericksburg Police wrote in a media advisory. The child, who shot himself Sunday afternoon in a Lafayette Blvd apartment, is expected to be okay.
19. KANAB, UT, 10/07/13: A Kane County sheriff’s deputy was shot during firearms training Monday in Kanab. The shooting occurred about noon at the sheriff’s training range, near the Kanab Airport, said Sgt. Alan Alldredge. A deputy was shot in both legs, apparently by one bullet, Alldredge said. The shooting is believed to have been an accident; no foul play is suspected. Alldredge would not comment on who is believed to have shot the deputy, or whether he is believed to have shot himself. About 10 deputies were target shooting at the range for their quarterly firearms qualifications.
20. MAITLAND, FL, 10/07/13: A Seminole County man was recovering Monday after his friend accidentally shot him in the chest while playing with a handgun, the Sheriff's Office said. The 20-year-old friend was visiting at a home in the 100 block of East Faith Terrace near Maitland when he pointed the 9mm Beretta at his 19-year-old buddy about 1:15 p.m. and pulled the trigger, investigators said. The 19-year-old was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition and is expected to recover. Both young men told investigators the shooting was an accident, and deputies said they don't expect to file criminal charges. The shooter said he thought the gun was unloaded.
21. EVANSVILLE, IN, 10/07/13: The man who police believe is responsible for a Monday night shooting also injured himself during the incident and checked himself into the hospital for treatment less than three hours later. According to Evansville police, 21-year-old Arthur L. Jones is suspected of shooting Johnny E. Phillips, 26, three times near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Delaware Street just before 9:30 p.m. Phillips suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Jones himself showed up at St. Mary’s Medical Center just after midnight claiming he was the victim of an attempted robbery and stabbing. However, after speaking with witnesses of the earlier shooting, investigators determined that they believe Jones’ injuries were the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered before or after the alleged confrontation with Phillips, according to a department news release. Investigators reportedly believe he shot himself either while getting his gun out of his pants or putting it back in his waistband. Jones had wounds to his scrotum and foot, according to police.
22. RANDOLPH, AZ, 10/07/13: A man reportedly threatened to shoot his son during an argument Monday in  the 5100 block of East Malcolm X Street in Randolph and accidently shot himself in the hand while taking the gun out of his pocket.
23. WOODBURY, MN, 10/07/13: A man’s pistol accidentally discharged while he was cleaning it at his home on Falstaff Road. He called to tell police about the incident. The bullet went into the floor and no one was injured.
24. OGDEN, UT, 10/08/13: A 67-year-old man and his wife were hospitalized early Tuesday after he accidentally fired his gun while cleaning it. Ogden Police Lt. Steve Zaccardi said police responded just after 2 a.m. to the 1100 block of Maxfield Drive on reports of a shooting. The man had not realized his .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun was loaded and accidentally fired. The bullet struck his left index finger before hitting the upper thigh of his 56-year-old wife.
25. ORLANDO, FL, 10/08/13: A 2-year-old boy is recovering at Arnold Palmer Hospital after he was shot with a .45-caliber handgun. The boy's father, grandmother and father's friend were in the home near Livingston Street and Powers Drive when the accident happened. Deputies said the injuries were reported to have been self-inflicted. "I'm trying to figure out how a 2-year-old pulled the trigger on a .45," neighbor Andre Demos said.
26. FALKLAND, NC, 10/08/13: A store owner in Falkland, North Carolina, took the law into his own hands Tuesday night. WITN in Greenville reported the owner of the Falkland Mini Mart, just outside of Greenville, opened fire when an armed gunman stormed in demanding cash. In the process of shooting at the robber, the owner of the store accidentally shot his friend in the stomach.
27. GRAND FORKS, MN, 10/08/13: Grand Forks police were dispatched to the 2100 block of South 29th Street in Grand Forks Tuesday evening for a weapons violation. At around 4:18 pm, 20-year-old Shane Rothenberger was removing ammo from a .40 caliber Glock handgun when one round was accidentally fired from the weapon. The round went through a sliding glass window. No other property or person was hit or injured by the round.
28. OAKLAND, CA, 10/08/13: A male victim may have shot himself in the leg while aboard an AC Transit bus near the Oakland hills this afternoon, an AC Transit spokesman said. The shooting on the bus near Fontaine Street and Crest Avenue was reported around 1:30 p.m., Oakland police said. AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson said a male victim was shot while near the back of the bus on the 46 line. The victim was taken to Highland Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. Johnson said the injury may be have been self-inflicted.
29. RED BANK, NJ, 10/08/13: Police say Ross Marcovitz was jailed after he accidentally fired a handgun in his apartment into an assisted-living facility next door. Marcovitz, 26, who lives in a fifth-floor apartment, is charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, possession of hollow-point bullets and discharge of a firearm within borough limits, he said. Capt. Darren McConnell, a spokesman for the department, said the shooting happened late Tuesday morning. The bullet went out the window of Marcovitz‘s Riverview Towers apartment and traveled through a window of an unoccupied room at The Atrium, an assisted-living facility next door, McConnell said. No one was injured, he said. Police were notified of the shooting by one of Marcovitz’s relatives, he said.
30. PAUL, ID, 10/08/13: The alleged shooter of Encornacion Duarte-Jabalera told police he was trying to scare the farmworker when he drew a gun on him Tuesday, court documents reveal. Rogelio Munoz Chavez, 36, of Paul, said he was trying to avoid another fight with Duarte-Jabalera by pointing the pistol at his feet when it went off and struck the 31-year-old farmer in the leg, according the account filed Friday by sheriff’s investigators in Minidoka County Court.
31. NASHVILLE, TN, 10/09/13: A gun was found in a woman's purse during security screening at the Metro courthouse in downtown Nashville on Wednesday morning. The weapon was found when the purse went through the x-ray machine at the entrance to the Justice A.A. Birch Building. The woman, identified by police as 30-year-old Sara Mitchell, did not have a permit, and she was issued a misdemeanor citation for unlawful carrying or possession. She told police she didn't realized the gun was inside her purse. Security said it was the fourth gun they have found during screenings this year.
32. MANNBORO, VA, 10/09/13: Police are investigating a shooting in Amelia that put an 11-year-old boy in the hospital. The shooting happened around 6:23 a.m. Wednesday, at a home in Mannboro. Neighbors say the home is located on Oak Grove Loop. According to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor Facebook page, two young boys, ages 10 and 11, were left alone. The boy was handling a gun, according to the Amelia Bulletin Monitor. That's when sources say the weapon accidentally fired. Another boy, about a year younger, was also there. Neighbors say they're brothers. It was the younger boy who called 911, and reported the child had been shot in the mouth. Neighbors describe the family as very kind, both the mom and dad serving in the military.
33. HIGHSPIRE, PA, 10/09/13: A man has died at a hospital after accidentally shooting himself in Highspire, according to the Dauphin County coroner. Coroner Graham Hetrick said the man accidentally shot himself in the leg and tried to get to the hospital in a personal vehicle, but died this morning. The man's name was not immediately released. Lower Swatara Township police said the shooting was first reported to an off-duty officer who had stopped at a traffic accident on the Harrisburg Pike shortly before midnight. The person driving the shooting victim to the hospital stopped at the crash site and told the officer that their passenger had shot himself in the leg and was bleeding very badly, police said.
34. ROYAL PALM BEACH, FL, 10/09/13: A woman passenger in a car in the area of State Road 80 and State Road 7, removed a gun from her purse and accidentally shot the driver on both of her upper thighs. The driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital. The officers recovered a Glock handgun from the floor in the front seat and also a .38 cal. revolver from the purse and both guns were taken into evidence.
35. CODY, WY, 10/09/13: A Cody man was airlifted from Dead Indian Meadows after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right calf Wednesday. Douglas Hunter, 48, accidentally shot himself in the leg with his .44 caliber sidearm, a sheriff’s office spokesman said. He was airlifted to a Billings area hospital where his condition is unknown. Park County Search and Rescue responded to the trailhead at about 6 p.m. after Hunter’s friend Ashley Duke, 33, of Cody called 911. According to Duke, the incident occurred along the Dead Indian Trail about seven miles from the trailhead, which is located off WYO 296 at mile-marker 25. Hunter was leading a team of pack horses from the trailhead back to camp after a resupply trip and was two miles from camp when the pack horses began “acting up.” Hunter attempted to regain control of the team and the lead rope caught the hammer of his sidearm, causing it to discharge, striking Hunter in the calf of his right leg.
36. CARROLL CO., VA, 10/10/13: Officials with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office are investigating an accidental shooting that resulted in the death of a man. Deputies responded to an accidental shooting call on Rippey Hollow Road in the Pipers Gap community to find Kevin Heath Frazier, 29, dead of an apparent gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing.
37. HUNTSVILLE, AL, 10/10/13: A man accidentally shot himself in the hand and leg when he went to put his gun in his pocket early this morning. According to a Huntsville police report, the man was in his girlfriend's car near Kenwood Drive and Norris Road when it happened around 1 a.m. He did not have life-threatening injuries. His girlfriend took him to Huntsville Hospital for treatment, police said.
38. HORN LAKE, MS, 10/10/13: Horn Lake police say the gun of a Tunica County sheriff's deputy, who received an apparently self-inflicted wound, has disappeared from the scene. Lt. Scott Evans tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/... ) police are asking for the public's help in locating the missing handgun, a police-issued .22-caliber Glock. The shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot of a Horn Lake apartment complex as the deputy, Angela White, was getting out of her car. The gun, which was inside her purse, fired and the bullet hit the deputy in the side. Investigators said she apparently dropped her purse and the gun fell out of the purse onto the pavement. Evans says the scene was unsecured after the shooting, and by the time police arrived, the gun was missing.
39. GILBERTON, PA, 10/10/13: The attorney for the police chief suspended for firing guns stopped his questions when the metal clattered against the concrete. The termination hearing for former Chief Mark Kessler that had been going on for more than 90 minutes stopped. The crowd in the cramped borough building turned its attention to Dave Zimmerman, one of Kessler's supporters, who leaned over to pick his pistol up off the floor. "It fell out of its holster," Zimmerman told the room, standing 2 feet behind Kessler and his lawyer, Joseph Nahas. "You've got to get out of here," Nahas told Zimmerman, who walked out of the room with his head down. At that, hearing officer Sam Falcone had seen enough. Before the hearing began, Falcone had been uncomfortable with the packed room. He asked people to move so no one would be standing behind him. Since the Kessler saga began this summer—after Kessler posted videos of himself firing automatic weapons and cursing out President Barack Obama, among others—his supporters have made a point exercise their Second Amendment rights at and around the Borough Council building. Now that one gun had come out, even if accidentally, Falcone called the attorneys into a side room. Noting the crowded nature of the ricochet-friendly room, Nahas said it would be dangerous if someone dropped a loaded gun on the hard floor. Accidents with firearms happen, he said. Kessler's lawyer said he was concerned for his safety and the safety of everyone else in the room.
40. PITSBURG, OH, 10/10/13: A wife on a walk with her husband Thursday wound up with a gunshot wound to her leg when his gun dropped out of his pants pocket, hit the sidewalk and discharged. The Darke County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate whether any charges will be filed against James Bayless, who has a carry-conceal permit, the sheriff's office said Thursday night. Constance Bayless, 54, was listed in stable condition at Wayne Healthcare, where she underwent surgery. The shooting occurred at about 12:16 p.m. in the 100 block of Harrison Street, according to the sheriff's office. James Bayless adjusted his pants as they walked and the firearm dropped out of his pants.
41. MILLINGTON, MD, 10/11/13: The Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff says officers responded to a Millington home for a deadly shooting in the early hours of Friday. Police say a 28-year-old man was found dead in the home on Teat Lane off of Red Lion Branch Road. Police say he was shot to death with a small caliber weapon. Police say an initial investigation indicates a small group of friends were at the residence when a weapon was fired hitting the victim. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say everyone stayed at the house and they are cooperating with the investigation. The weapon has been recovered, according to police.
42. BROOKLYN, NY, 10/11/13: An off-duty correction officer accidentally shot himself and a colleague at a gas station in Brooklyn Friday as he was transferring the gun between holsters, authorities say. The correction officer was transferring the gun from his pancake holster to his shoulder holster when the firearm discharged, a Department of Corrections spokesman said. The bullet hit the officer in the hand, then struck another off-duty officer in the hip. The officers were at a gas station in Bushwick.
43. PEORIA, IL, 10/11/13: Police were called to that block about 1:40 a.m. Friday on several reports of shots fired and found Domanque D. Hinkle, 26, laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his upper thigh. He initially told police he was walking down the street when he heard shots ring out and felt his leg burning.  At the hospital, officers found Hinkle had gun powder burns indicating he may have accidentally shot himself while drawing a weapon, the report said. Hinkle refused to cooperate further with police while he was being treated.
44. ETNA TOWNSHIP, OH, 10/11/13: What appeared to be an accidental shooting Friday night in Etna Township sent a woman to the hospital. Licking County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Dave Starling said a 25-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Grant Medical Center in Columbus with a gunshot wound. He said the woman was in fair condition after she was shot by a 25-year-old man at 470 Ballman Road SW. The shooting was reported about 7:30 p.m. Sgt. Brock Harmon said the shooting appears to have been accidental, but the sheriff’s office is in the preliminary stages of the investigation. Harmon said he interviewed several other family members who were in the home at the time of the shooting, and all indications are the weapon was discharged accidentally.
45. CHICAGO, IL, 10/11/13: About 9 p.m. Friday a man showed up at University of Chicago Hospitals with a gunshot wound to the buttocks that he sustained in the 1400 block of East 61st Street in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood, according to police. An investigation revealed the victim had been accidentally shot by a friend of his as they were watching movies with two other people and playing with the gun, police said. The victim was struck in the left inner thigh and the bullet lodged in his left buttock. He was later transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was good, police said.
46. FAYETTEVILLE, AR, 10/11/13: Police are seeking a “person of interest” in a shooting Friday night (Oct. 11) during an apparent attempted burglary in Fayetteville, according to a police department news release. One woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries in the incident. Mallory Britt, 25, was shot in the left calf during a struggle for a handgun in the attempted burglary at 3216 Warwick Dr., according to the release. She was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center, where she was treated and released. Police responded to a disturbance at the house about 9:25 p.m and received a 911 call from a resident claiming to have been the victim of a break-in during which a woman living there was “accidentally” shot, the release states. Virgil Gulley, 24, told police he answered his door with a handgun when someone knocked, and when he opened the door, two people “with bandannas covering their faces rushed inside and began struggling for the firearm,” the release states. The handgun discharged during the struggle, with one round striking Britt, according to the release.
