The debate over sending more U.S. troops to Iraq intensified yesterday as President Bush signaled that he will listen but not necessarily defer to balky military officers, while Gen. John P. Abizaid, his top Middle East commander and a leading skeptic of a so-called surge, announced his retirement.

Diminishing Civil Liberties
This stuff (see text box below) just amazes me as Dictator Bush continues to promote the diminution of the rights of the people of this nation and of those who visit us. I am just flabbergasted that this it is even possible for our government to consider this. What have we become?
We have met the enemy, and he is one of us.

WASHINGTON - Immigrants arrested in the United States may be held indefinitely on suspicion of terrorism and may not challenge their imprisonment in civilian courts, the Bush administration said Monday, opening a new legal front in the fight over the rights of detainees.
In court documents filed with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., the Justice Department said a new anti-terrorism law being used to hold detainees in Guantanamo Bay also applies to foreigners captured and held in the United States.

More On Bolton
From The Washington Note...
He can change his words, but President George W. Bush can't change his stripes. Just 7 minutes after his meeting with Congresswoman Nacny Pelosi ended, the White House notified the press that President Bush was going to re-nominate John Bolton as US Ambassador to the UN. Did he advise her during their meeting? No. She didn't find out until she returned to her Congressional offices.
At least she found out early on that the man is nothing but a snake in the grass and a pain in the ass.
