You had to wonder about this when you first heard it.
I love the backlash.

Over 1,000 Harvard students delivered a petition to Harvard University's JFK School on Saturday, demanding an investigation into how and why the school approved a 2009 doctoral thesis arguing that Hispanics have lower IQs. The thesis was written by Jason Richwine, a co-author of a paper by the conservative Heritage Foundation that argued immigration reform would cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion. The discovery of Richwine's paper by the Washington Post sparked a firestorm around the Heritage study, and several days later Richwine resigned from the think tank.
Now Harvard students want to know how a thesis built on those views and assumptions was able to make it through the approval process in the first place. "Academic freedom and a reasoned debate are essential to our academic community,'' the petition read. "However, the Harvard Kennedy School cannot ethically stand behind academic work advocating a national policy of exclusion and advancing an agenda of discrimination."

Religion and judgement
I'm a humanist. I don't believe there is any God or god-like force watching over us and helping us win our basketball game. I don't believe we get our genetics from a god-like being that controls which sperm gets to the egg first and gives us the ability to be the football star. Not when we can watch starvation right before our eyes, not when we can watch TV shows like the new HBO series "Vice" and see young children being put front and center in wars. The God that I was taught about as a child wouldn't allow this stuff. And if there is a God who makes the world like it is, then he is a sick fuck. I wouldn't worship him if he did exist.
I believe in people - we need to take care of one another. We get only one shot at life and we need to make the best of it. We need to do what we can to care for - feed and house - one another. When religion starts to teach that it is okay to hate and to discriminate and to turn fellow human beings away, it is a sick fucking business. Just saying.

How society works against women
Probably a lot of us are guilty of this - including a lot of women. It wasn't uncommon, where I last worked, for women to tell me they did NOT want a woman for a boss.

Discrimination Is Okay In Some Places
I don't disagree with the judge's ruling in this case. See what you think. I'll comment more after the clip, from The Los Angeles Times...

I've said it before - I don't like any of the organized religions - but the constitution guarantees them the right to do most anything they want - short of human sacrifice.
Check out the image used in this post - does this imply religious persecution? Is this church school discriminating against Christians and Muslims? Is there any difference between this and what's posted above?

After a Lutheran school expelled two 16-year-old girls for having "a bond of intimacy" that was "characteristic of a lesbian relationship," the girls sued, contending the school had violated a state anti-discrimination law.So, what do you think? I think "freedom of religion" means exactly that - religions are free to treat people any way they want. If the girls are so stupid that they want to continue to participate in a religion that hates them, one has to ask just how dumb they are.
In response to that suit, an appeals court decided this week that the private religious school was not a business and therefore did not have to comply with a state law that prohibits businesses from discriminating. A lawyer for the girls said Tuesday that he would ask the California Supreme Court to overturn the unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal.
