Texas in the news

There was a quick piece on one of the morning news shows today about Gov. Rick Perry of Texas demanding an apology from one of the California newspapers which ran a cartoon of Perry in front of some businessmen proclaiming, "Come to Texas where business is booming." Clearly a reference to the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas last week. The newspaper has refused to apologize and I thought the cartoon was funny.

The following was published a couple of days ago over on Crooks and Liars.

Come To Texas, Where It's Better For Business!

Meanwhile, in the Texan business community …Well, come to find out, the West Fertilizer Company lied to the EPA.

The fertilizer plant that exploded Wednesday night in West, Texas, reported to the Environmental Protection Agency and local public safety officials that it presented no risk of fire or explosion, documents show.

West Fertilizer Co. reported having as much as 54,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia on hand in an emergency planning report required of facilities that use toxic or hazardous chemicals.

But the report, reviewed Wednesday night by The Dallas Morning News, stated "no" under fire or explosive risks. The worst possible scenario, the report said, would be a 10-minute release of ammonia gas that would kill or injure no one.

So the volunteer firefighters at the burning plant had no idea what they were dealing with. Because it's easy to lie in Texas. All ya gotta do is check a box.

And why would they lie? They were storing 1,350 times the amount of ammonium nitrate that would normally trigger safety oversight by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They didn't want EPA or the DHS in their business. That might cost them time and money. We all know how Rick Perry feels about the EPA, don't we? He thinks its sole goal is to kill jobs.

"Somebody has to tell the E.P.A. that we don't need you monkeying around and fiddling around and getting in our business with every kind of regulation you can dream up," he said. "You're doing nothing more than killing jobs. It's a cemetery for jobs at the E.P.A."

So, Rick Perry handed us this mushroom cloud on a silver platter.

I cannot wait to hear hear him and Ron Paul explain how the market forces will correct this. The company will declare bankruptcy, its owners will keep their money and the injured people will hold bake sales to pay their medical bills. That's what we call "Business Friendly" in Texas.

But now Rick Perry, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz just love the Federal Government. I tell you what, I would buy Chris Christie an airplane ticket if he would come down to West, Texas, and shake his finger in Ted Cruz's face.

Cruz voted against aid for New Jersey but now wants aid for Texas. They can all kiss my big blue butt.

Psychology 101

It needs to be asked - why are Conservatives so ignorant?

From Daily Kos

Rick Perry strikes again.

Gov. Rick Perry says that the free expansion of Medicaid for the state included in Obamacare is just one big trick by the federal government.

"Texas will not be held hostage to the Obama administration's attempt to force us into this fool's errand," he said, flanked by Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and Reps. Joe Barton and Michael Burgess.

Rick Perry isn't entirely clear on what being held hostage means, apparently. Three years of free money to make people healthier isn't effective hostage taking, but hell, it's Perry, and it makes more sense than this statement, from the same press conference: "It was federally sponsored jailbreak that betrayed the most fundamental promise any government makes its citizens." Okay, then.

But this is Dumb Pronouncements From Texas About Medicaid Day, so chime on in, Dick Armey.

Bottom line is that the status quo doesn't make sense for providers or patients. Neither does the Medicaid expansion called for by ObamaCare, which seeks to double down on a failed system while offering no constructive path to reform. As Texans, we can do better.

The answer, of course, is block grants. The feds should just give Texas a chunk of money to spend how it wants and to figure out on its own what it's going to do when the money runs out. Because the money will run out. That's a feature of the block grant plan: It's the system Republicans have devised to kill off Medicaid once and for all.

Right now, Texas has 2,036,000 uninsured adults [pdf]. Out of those 2 million, 1,748,000 would be eligible for Medicaid under the expansion, if Texas were to take it (289,000 are currently eligible, but are not enrolled). In one year, as many as 2,938 lives could be saved in Texas with this expansion. But for Rick Perry and Dick Armey, those preventible deaths don't matter. Because freedom.

Speaking of Republican dickheads

All of the states in the US have their own problems to work on, but the Republicans in particular can be some real dickheads...

From Daily Kos

Rick Perry begging California businesses to head to Texas
Perry has launched a high-profile battle for California companies, running radio ads in California touting the Lone Star State's low taxes and favorable business climate. The ads will be heard in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego and the Inland Empire area east of Los Angeles. "Building a business is tough, but I hear building a business in California is next to impossible. This is Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and I have a message for California businesses: Come check out Texas," starts the 30-second spot.
Perry hears that building a business in California is next to impossible? The same California that has more Fortune 500 businesses than any other state? The same California that has given us Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Intel, Disney, DirecTV, Amgen, Clorox, eBay, Visa, Mattel, HP, Gap and even Chevron? (How's that for a diversified economy?) Man, how did all those companies build their businesses when it was impossible to do so?
Perhaps Rick Perry heard wrong.
As I noted last week, conservatives have a ton invested in the fiction that California businesses are fleeing to Texas in massive numbers. The reality is that California had 254 businesses leave the state in 2011, only about three dozen to Texas. At the same time, California entrepreneurs started about 167,000 new businesses. So you can imagine, the Golden State isn't exactly trembling with fear.

Rick Perry loves to kill him some of the poors...

Rick Perry: The bad economy is a lesson from God

Texas Gov. Rick Perry “brings to the presidential race a law-and-order credential that none of his competitors can match — even if they wanted to,” the Washington Post reports.

“In his nearly 11 years as chief executive, Perry, now running for the GOP presidential nomination, has overseen more executions than any governor in modern history: 234 and counting. That’s more than the combined total in next two states — Oklahoma and Virginia — since the death penalty was restored 35 years ago.”

The rest of this short post is really worth reading - Perry could be a contender.
