Suicide in the United States has surged to the highest levels in nearly 30 years, with increases in every age group except older adults. The rise has been particularly steep for women and middle-aged Americans. The suicide rate for middle-aged women, ages 45 to 64, jumped by 63 percent since 1999, and by 43 percent for men in that age range, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which released the study today.
Why? There are many reasons, of course, but more than anything the rise in suicides correlates with problems associated with jobs and wages. Declining median family income along with rising economic insecurity are taking a terrible toll.
