Fourteen of 48 guns discovered by TSA agents at airports around the country during the week of Nov. 13-19, 2015
Fourteen of 48 guns discovered by TSA agents at airports around the country during the week of Nov. 13-19, 2015.
As promised, the hunting accidents continued to mount. There were 11 confirmed, and one additional suspected hunting-related accidental shooting during the week of 11/15-11/21, up from five, then seven, then eight in previous weeks. Speaking of hunting accidents, Lewis County, Washington police must’ve had a hell of a time keeping up with the opening of deer season, with reports of two hunters accidentally blasting through homes in different parts of the county on the same day.
In other news, 21 people accidentally shot themselves, and another six shot family members or significant others. Twelve kids were accidentally shot, and among our original 48 listings, 11 involved fatalities.
The standout story of the week: The terrible episode involving the death of a 5-year-old in Goodlettsville, Tenessee. How did it happen? Dad thought it would be fun to use his pistol’s laser sight to play with the cat. So the kids did, too. Only they weren’t as familiar with exactly which parts of the gun do what, and found the switch that sets bullets flying instead of the one that turns on the fun cat toy. If only dad had stopped to think about what can really happen, even in just a few seconds, when you decide to put down a cat toy and go into the kitchen. Of course, the risks are considerably more dangerous if your cat toy is mounted on a loaded handgun. And this wasn’t even the first such shooting this year. If only it were easier to find pet toys that weren’t attached to firearms. Which are, of course, not toys, etc., etc. But yet, somehow ...
  1. YORK, PA, 11/15/15: Twelve-year-old Marlin Banks Jr. was accidentally shot in his York City home early this morning, York City Police Sergeant William Wentz said. Marlin died shortly after being taken to York Hospital, according to the York County Coroner's Office. Emergency personnel responded to a call to the Marlin's family's home in the 200 block of North Richland Avenue at about 7:40 AM, a York County 911 official said. There, they found the wounded boy and a second injured person, a man Wentz said was related to the boy. The man had lacerations to his hand that he told police he'd gotten from punching the wall, Wentz said.Shortly after police and emergency workers arrived on the scene, the man sat on the porch cradling his hand and crying inconsolably while family members and medical personnel tended to him, his white shirt spattered with blood. A woman's cries were audible from inside the house; Marlin was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance and police helped members of the victim's family to their car. "It was accidental — that's how it was relayed to us," Wentz said. Police were not sure whether Marlin accidentally shot himself or died at the hand of another person, he said. More information will be released following an autopsy, which is scheduled for Monday morning, according to the coroner's office. MORE: Investigators said Banks accidentally shot himself in his home while he was looking at a gun. It remains unclear how Banks got access to the gun. Banks was a seventh grade student at Ferguson K-8. York City School District is providing counseling services to students and staff.

It was not immediately clear how the child got access to the weapon. The Rock Hill Police Department is continuing to investigate. Authorities are discussing whether or not to pursue criminal charges. The Department of Social Services is also investigating. When the man was ready to leave the tree stand he began to attach a drop line to his shotgun to lower it to the ground. While attaching the line, the shotgun went off. A slug entered and exited the man’s thigh, then entered and exited his calf, Malloch said. The man called a friend and the DNR was contacted to respond. A conservation officer responded to the tree stand and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg. The officer transported the man out of the hunting area to EMS. The man was taken to a Macomb hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. Malloch said the accidental shooting was the second one during regular firearm season, which began Sunday. He said a man in Calhoun County also suffered non-fatal injuries after an accidental shooting Sunday morning.

But when the investigator wrote it all up, the story evolved into a bungled burglary and murder plot. 20 year old Thomas Claxton lived in his dad's basement, but he told police that his father was kicking him out if he didn't get a job or go to college. So Claxton told officers that he had been plotting with friends to break into the home and kill his father in the process. He gave them the access codes to the home and a gun safe. During the robbery, things were taken, but the father was not harmed. However, one of Claxton's friends did get shot during the break-in. His wounds were not life threatening. According to Riley, Roberta Samard called the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center about 6:10 AM to report the incident at the home she shared with her husband at 2525 Millersburg Drive N.E. Deputies and detectives spent the day interviewing Samard, who was cooperative, Riley said. They also obtained a search warrant for the home. They learned that Roberta Samard has recently been dealing with depression issues. Her husband left for work about 6 AM and Riley said it’s unclear whether he got to his pickup or actually drove down the shared driveway of the property before returning to the home. “He went to the sliding glass door on the back patio and found his wife had gotten a handgun and was contemplating suicide,” Riley said. “When he confronted her, she started to point the gun at herself and it went off, striking her husband in the neck.” Riley said Samard then called 9-1-1. Kenneth Samard was pronounced dead at the scene. Samard was arrested, charged and lodged at the Linn County Jail. 14. TACOMA, WA, 11/16/15: It was not the smoothest break-in. Jordan Bailey allegedly broke into a Tacoma house and was surprised to find one of the three men who lived there asleep in a bedroom. Bailey, 22, took a gun he found in the home and pointed it at the victim, who woke up. The victim later described Bailey as “wild and crazy,” according to court documents. Bailey then rummaged through the house, setting an iPad, laptop and other electronics by the front door so he could more easily haul them to his car. “While in a bedroom, the suspect suddenly discharges the firearm and it appears to have struck the suspect in the leg,” records show. Bailey loaded the stolen items into his vehicle and tried to leave but his car – which had duct tape covering the license plate number - wouldn’t start. He then allegedly threatened to shoot the victim if he didn’t help Bailey push the car and get it moving. The victim reported the incident to police, who eventually linked the crime to Bailey. The break-in happened Nov. 16; he was arrested Tuesday. Bailey told varying counts of what happened to police before admitting he accidentally shot himself. On Wednesday, prosecutors charged him with first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping and theft of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $500,000 bail.

  32. PLAQUEMINE, LA, 11/19/15: Around 9:30 Thursday night, Iberville Sheriff's deputies went out to a home on Stassi Rd. responding to a call for shots fired. When they arrived, they found a 15-year-old boy, who had been shot once in the head and died. "There was some alcohol involved earlier that evening, horse play and next thing you know, gun was pulled out. He did not realize they had one in the chamber and during the horse play with the gun, the shot was fired and struck his young, 15-yr-old in the face area," said Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi. The boy's cousin, Shawn Griffin, 23, of Plaquemine has been arrested for the killing. Sheriff Stassi said it's an unfortunate shooting because Griffin was playing around with the gun and thought it was empty, accidentally shooting and killing his own cousin. He's now charged with negligent homicide. "This is not like a hunting accident out in the woods where we might wait for the grand jury to come back. In this particular case, because you know you have a gun, you know you're pointing it at an individual, that's why he was charged with negligent homicide in this case," said Sheriff Stassi. People in the community said Griffin is an Iraq war veteran and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. They add it's just an unfortunate situation and one that's left a family mourning not only over the victim, but also for the alleged shooter. Griffin has a $10,000 bond set.
