From Robert Reich
A friend phoned this morning. “What happened to Bernie?” he asked. “I haven’t heard a word about him for a month.”
I explained two things are keeping Bernie out of the news. First, the major media aren’t covering his campaign. The establishment is already assuming Hillary is the winner. But the American people are still in Bernie's camp. After all, he just won Time Magazine’s poll for the most influential person of the year – significantly ahead of Pope Francis, President Obama, Pakistani girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai, Hillary, and Trump.
Second, Bernie is sticking to his economic message and not being swayed by the news of the day. As he told a crowd of 1,000 in New Hampshire a few days ago, “If you turn on the TV, what they now say is we’ve got one problem: It’s ISIS. We don’t have to worry about old people not having enough to eat. We don’t have to worry about having more people in jail than any other country… All we should focus on now, 24/7, is ISIS. But I say we are a great enough country, and a smart enough country that we can destroy ISIS as we rebuild a disappearing middle class.”
Bernie is right. Our major challenge is still to rebuild our economy for everyone and to reclaim our democracy. He’s sticking to that message, even though the media are sick of it..
