Fifteen of 64 guns discovered by TSA agents at airports around the country, during the week of 9/18 - 9/24/15.
Fifteen of 64 guns discovered by TSA agents at airports around the country, during the week of 9/18 - 9/24/15.
Fully one-half of our list this time is made up of people accidentally shooting themselves or family members. Most of the rest is your regular assortment of kids getting shot (9), people cleaning or clearing their guns (3), hunting accidents (3), and neighbors firing into other people's properties (2).
Yeah, there was the guy in Brooklyn who accidentally shot himself in the junk when the cops caught him taking a leak on the street. There's a lot of junkshot GunFAIL going around these days.
And sure, there was the executive for a chain of gun stores who accidentally shot himself in the hand in his company's Knoxville store.
There was even yet another 2 year old, this time in Lake Placid, NY, who got hold of a family gun and accidentally shot his mother.
But the title for the week goes to the possibly not-all-that-good guy with a gun in Houston who witnessing a carjacking, decided to draw his gun and intervene, only to end up shooting the victim of the carjacking in the head, while the carjackers got away. So proud of his heroism was he, that he cleaned up his own shell casings and took off before the police arrived.
No one could have predicted that.
But most of the rest of what follow, beneath the fold, has become pretty routine, if not exactly predictable.
  1. JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, OH, 9/20/15: Deputies said a shooting that injured a teenage girl is being investigated as an accidental shooting. In a release, deputies said they were sent to Blairwood Avenue in Jefferson Township around 3 AM after on a reported accidental shooting. Deputies said they later located the shooting location on Coulson Drive. Earlier reports indicated the victim was transported by a private vehicle and dropped off near Miami Valley Hospital at the intersection of South Main and Wyoming streets. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, but her condition was not available. Deputies said the incident is still being investigated as an accidental shooting.
  2. OGDEN, UT, 9/20/15: A 13-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the neck by her 11-year-old sister Sunday after the girls found a gun in their grandparents' bedroom while cleaning. The girl, however, did not suffer any life threatening injuries. Ogden Police Lt. Jake Sube said she was very lucky. "It absolutely could have been very tragic," he said. The incident happened just after 3 PM while the girls were at their grandparents' home in the 100 North block of Pingree Ave. "It appears that the two girls were alone cleaning the grandparents' bedroom when the gun was found. Moments after finding the gun, the 11-year-old accidentally discharged the firearm striking the 13-year-old in the neck," he said. Sube did not know Sunday where in the bedroom the gun was found. The older girl actually told her sister to be careful after she found the weapon because it might be loaded, he said. "About the same moment it was fired," Sube said. The weapon used was described as an older model .22-caliber revolver, Sube said. Police believe the elderly grandparents had not used the gun for many years and likely forgot it was in the bedroom. "It had been out of sight, out of mind for a long time," Sube said. He said the bullet broke her skin but did not penetrate any vital organs. He said a lump in her skin where the bullet came to rest could be seen. "When police first made contact with the victim, she was conscious and alert but obviously shaken up. She was taken to a local hospital in good spirits and will likely have surgery to remove the bullet," Sube said. "She had a very positive attitude." No arrests were made or citations issued Sunday. The investigation would continue, he said. "The family involved has avoided a tragedy today and we are very thankful. This could have been much worse," said Sube who also said the incident was a good reminder for all gun owners to keep their weapons secured in their homes, even if they don't have children of their own.
  3. JACKSON, MS, 9/20/15: Police say a woman has been shot on 611 Avalon Road. According to Officer Green with Jackson police, the incident happened around 2:18 PM. The shooting was reportedly accidental. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Birmingham police responded to the 600 block of Sundale Drive close to 7 PM. They found a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest. 6. LAKEWOOD, CO, 9/21/15: A woman was driving in a car on West Colfax Avenue near Jay Street late Monday night when she was apparently shot by someone trying to quell an argument at a Lakewood motel, police say. The woman pulled her car over and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman. "The strongest indication of what happened was that a person fired a shot to break up what was going on," Davis said. Police are still investigating the 10:30 PM incident. No arrests have been made. A large group of people were involved in some type of confrontation, just before a man pulled out a gun and started firing, Davis said. "Ten to 20 shots were fired very rapidly," he said. It appears the female driver, whose identity has not been released, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to be struck by a bullet, Davis said.
  7. WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI, 9/21/15: Officers were dispatched to the 7000 block of Ten Hill, near West 14 Mile and Middlebelt roads, after a woman accidentally shot herself at 9:45 PM Sept. 21. According to West Bloomfield Deputy Police Chief Curt Lawson, the 59-year-old woman was reaching for something in a kitchen cabinet when a .45-caliber pistol fell off the shelf, struck the counter and discharged. The woman was shot in the stomach. When officers arrived, the woman was lying on the kitchen floor, and family members were applying pressure to the gunshot wound. Lawson said she was conscious and breathing. Officers secured the scene, and West Bloomfield paramedics attended to the woman and transported her to a local hospital. The pistol was found in the kitchen inside an Uncle Mike’s waistband holster. “It appears that a projectile from the weapon had went through the bottom of the holster,” Lawson said. Six family members who were inside the house during the event were interviewed. Lawson said they confirmed that the gun accidentally discharged. The gun was placed into evidence, and detectives will follow up on the incident. “It does appear to be an accidental shooting at this time,” Lawson said.
  8. BISMARCK, ND, 9/21/15: Bismarck police say charges are being considered for a 45-year-old Billings, Mont., man they say accidentally fired a handgun while he was clearing its magazine. The man was staying at the Days Inn, 1300 East Capitol Ave., on Monday and immediately reported the gunshot to hotel staff, according to Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena. 9. BENTON CO., WA, 9/22/15: A mail-man got quite the scare Tuesday afternoon when someone shot at his mail truck. As the mail truck was turning onto Locust Grove off Clodfelter Road, the mailman felt his truck being hit with bullets. The mail-man called the Benton County Sheriff's Office. Deputies cautiously entered a barn nearby and discovered no one was inside. They later learned an older man was using his friend's property to hunt pigeons. He accidentally shot toward the mail truck when it unexpectedly drove into the backstop of his shot. Sergeant Mathew Clarke says hunters have to be responsible for where their shot ends up. "There's always a possibility of a criminal charge," Sergeant Clarke said. "Anytime you're out shooting you're responsible for your backstop. You're responsible for that bullet. If you fire that gun and that bullet strikes somebody or strikes a vehicle or property, you can be charged." The shots only slightly damaged the back of the mail truck and fortunately, no one got hurt.
  10. CASTLE ROCK, WA, 9/22/15: A Castle Rock couple is still in shock after a bullet hit their house and ended up in a box of muffin mix. Les and Deann Murphy were outside, working in their yard around 5:30 PM on Tuesday when all of a sudden, they heard a loud gunshot. Then eventually, they noticed a bullet hole in the side of their home. "I looked and I realize, that's not a moth, it's a hole. Right away my mind said, the shot, the hole, this is scary," said Deann. At first, Deann said they didn't even realize the bullet hit their house until she saw the hole in their bedroom wall. Then, they followed its path. Through the other bedroom wall, into their pantry, breaking several bottles of wine and then finally, the bullet stopped inside a box of muffin mix. They pulled the bullet out and called the police. A deputy told them the bullet came from a rifle. Deann and her husband have an idea who fired it and they're disappointed no one checked to make sure they were OK. "Someone fired it. Even if it was a mistake, they could've let us know. Because we have people living here and a little baby here and this has never ever happened before even in hunting season, a misfired bullet like that. It was very scary and upsetting," said Deann. The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office is looking into the incident, but so far, the shooter has not been identified.

  26. EAST HAVEN, CT, 9/24/15 [NEW]: Police are investigating after one of their detectives allegedly discharged her weapon by accident while in her home last week and hit a neighbor’s house, according to Lt. David Emerman. “The Department is aware of the incident and is investigating as per Department policy,” said Emerman in an email. “I can provide further information once the investigation has been completed.” Emerman did not give further details about what the department’s policy is for an officer firing his or her weapon off-duty. According to the neighbor’s account, confirmed by Emerman, Detective Shirley Conyers was in her home on Sept. 24 cleaning her firearm when it accidentally discharged, sending a bullet through the window of the neighbor’s home. No one was injured during the incident. The neighbor, who asked to not be identified, said he will not press charges. Multiple attempts to contact Conyers were unsuccessful. Neighbors living in surrounding houses said they were not aware of the incident and did not hear the gunshot. According to John DeCarlo, associate professor and criminal justice researcher at University of New Haven and former Branford police chief, an accidental discharge is possible any time an officer removes the gun from its holster, which is common. “Very often weapons are presented, usually every day at roll call, so it comes into the holster and out of the holster at least once a day and it adds to the fact that there is an accidental discharge,” said DeCarlo. Officers are free to bring their firearms home and are taught proper gun care, DeCarlo said, including how to safely clean one, which needs to be done after every time it’s fired. The first step when cleaning a gun is to clear the firearm by making sure there is no ammunition in the chamber and the magazine is removed, DeCarlo said. “What you would do is disassemble the gun,” he said. “After the weapon is cleared and made safe, you brush the parts and wipe it with a cloth.” Any time a weapon goes off, DeCarlo said, accidentally or not, the officer will file a report of it and the department will do an investigation. The protocol for towns varies as departments each have their own. “The fact is that there is no state law that governs an investigation or specific protocol for discharge,” DeCarlo said. DeCarlo said, statistically, accidents like this are bound to happen because of the number of police officers and weapons. “In Connecticut, we have about 9,000 police officers,” Decarlo said. “Each one of these officers carry a firearm and it is unavoidable that at times there is going to be an accidental discharge.”
  27. KNOXVILLE, TN, 9/25/15: A man working at a South Knox County gun store accidentally shot himself in the hand Friday afternoon.
