Speaking of the schools

As the conservatives (and others who support private and charter schools to the point of stripping funding from the public schools) continue their battle, they are blind to the real impact of  their actions. They believe there is a cadre of exceptional people in our society who want to be teachers, who would do a good job of teaching, for less money, if only the impediments to becoming a teacher were torn down.

The truth of the matter is that teacher pay is already mediocre at best among people qualified to teach. Statistics show that now, due to poor incentives to attract teachers into the field, 70% of America's teachers come from the bottom 30% of college graduates. What do you think will happen when you reduce pay even more?

And if you think teaching is such an attractive field, chew on this fact - 50% of America's teachers leave the field within 5-years of starting.

So go ahead, conservatives, keep wiping out the public schools, the higher standards for teachers, and reducing pay and benefits, you can reduce America to rubble in no time.
