Tens of thousands of New Yorker's names have been added to a list of people who are too "mentally unstable" to be in possession of or own a gun.
.
According to an article in the New York Times on Sunday, more than 34,000 people, who have seen a mental health professional and showed they were "likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others" had their names added to the list.
.
The list is a by-product of the SAFE Act, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed in to law last year. As part of the law, anyone who has a permit and then is deemed mentally unfit to own a gun, will have that permit revoked.
.
The names on the list aren't public, and according to The Times, fewer than 300 people on the list already had gun permits.
