Smithsonian workers strike to protest low wages
Last week, federally contracted workers at the Ronald Reagan Building staged a one-day strike over their low wages and wage theft they say they've experienced. Today, workers at the Smithsonian are on strike, again citing low wages. That makes three one-day strikes by Washington, D.C., workers employed by private companies that hold federal contracts for things like fast food franchises in federal buildings.
According to a recent report by Demos, federal dollars fund nearly 2 million low-wage jobs, more than Walmart and McDonald's combined. These workers, like fast food workers in cities across the country, are organizing for higher wages and better treatment on the job.
