Four Republicans Who Don't Understand the Constitution They've Sworn to Defend

Members of Congress swear an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, but that doesn't mean they understand it. Over the past week, several Republican lawmakers have expressed outrage over the fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the Boston marathon bombings, was read his rights and reportedly stopped talking to interrogators. These GOPers have accused President Barack Obama of making a grave error by recognizing the constitutional rights of a suspected terrorist.

The Obama administration, however, didn't have a choice in the matter. Tsarnaev was read his rights by a magistrate judge during an initial appearance that was required by the federal rules of criminal procedure, which are rooted in the constitutional right to due process under the law. The Supreme Court has held that, barring exigent circumstances, a criminal suspect has to be brought before a judicial officer within 48 hours, give or take, at which point the suspect is informed of his rights no matter what.

Fat lot of good this is doing us...

I think I went to a liberal school system.We were taught that the Constitution of the United States served two purposes - to protect the basic human rights of all citizens and to ensure that the will of the majority on all other matters would prevail.  Most Republicans seem to have gone to a different school - they learned that when they couldn't get their own way, screw the human rights of all citizens they don't like (gays, women, blacks, etc.) and fuck the majority - set up roadblocks to change. They are very good at what they do.

Republicans and conservatives will probably have a lot of trouble swallowing the facts in this post. It's easier to make up a pretend history, sprinkle in a few of your delusions, add a few stories that never happened and call it a day than to really study the history of America.

It has become clear to me that a stupidity that is almost unfathomable has become the politics of the day. Unless there are pieces to the story that are not reported in the article quoted below, this has clearly got to be unconstitutional. There is simply no allowance under our Constitution for free speech to be blocked just because it is inconvenient.

A 74-year-old retired mathematician who sells anti-Bush buttons at a Maryland farmers' market has become a symbol of free speech to some people. Others say Alan McConnell is a nuisance.

McConnell was at the market in Kensington as usual yesterday, selling buttons that say "Impeach Him" He has sold the $1 buttons for months; he told The Washington Post he uses the money earned to pay for "Impeach Them Both" yard signs.

McConnell showed up this weekend, when police arrested him and forcibly carried him to a squad car. A crowd of about 40 McConnell supporters booed the arrest, chanting "Free speech!"
