An alternative for conservatives

Fat lot of good this is doing us...

I think I went to a liberal school system.We were taught that the Constitution of the United States served two purposes - to protect the basic human rights of all citizens and to ensure that the will of the majority on all other matters would prevail.  Most Republicans seem to have gone to a different school - they learned that when they couldn't get their own way, screw the human rights of all citizens they don't like (gays, women, blacks, etc.) and fuck the majority - set up roadblocks to change. They are very good at what they do.

Is the U.S. a nation founded on religious principles?

I suppose it depends on who you ask, but there a number of our founding fathers who thought not.

The U.S. continues to trail the rest of the world.

Our greatness is diminishing because of our growing love for money over life.

Falling further behind

As we fail to fix the things that are wrong with our nation, we fall further and further behind the rest of the developed world. Someday Republican obstructionism will be viewed as the second civil war in the U.S.

The announcement that a German company is opening a small manufacturing facility in Wisconsin brings up a question that just a few years ago would have been unthinkable:

Is this another case of a European company coming to the United States for the cheap labor?

As contrary to the stature we're accustomed to the United States having in the world, this is a very real trend. Ikea, a company that has done just fine in Sweden with strong unions and a $19 minimum wage, came to Virginia and started its employees at $8 per hour, with many of them temps at lower wages and no benefits. T-Mobile, owned by a heavily unionized German company, fights unions here. BMW recently drove down wages by laying off unionized workers at a California distribution center and outsourcing their jobs to a subcontractor. But in South Carolina, BMW skipped ever having a union, paying its workers $15 an hour, half what German BMW workers make.

The Solution to Our Budget Problems Is So Obvious: We Need to Raise Taxes on the Rich, ASAP The answer to many of our country’s domestic problems is obvious -- the rich need to pay their fair share.

A great tragedy of the United States is that the answer to many of the country’s domestic problems is obvious, even simple, but can’t be done because of a dominating political/media dynamic that rules that solution out.

The solution to these many problems – from the budget deficit to crumbling infrastructure, from mass joblessness to income inequality, from environmental degradation to educational shortfalls -- is to raise taxes on the rich and to use that money to get the United States back on track and advancing toward the future.

And there are clear justifications for doing so, from practicality to fairness. Though many multi-millionaires fancy themselves self-made men (and women), the truth is that they all have profited from investments that American taxpayers have made over the decades, and even centuries.
