You can't win for losing with the evangelical Christian right. The following two clips are from the same article in the Los Angeles Times...

Scientists reported Thursday that for the first time they have made human embryonic stem cells without destroying embryos, a development that the government's top stem cell official said would make the controversial research eligible for federal funding.

The Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, an ethicist at the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, said that removing a single cell from an embryo turns it into "a starting source for harvestable raw materials, in a gesture that reduces young humans to commodities."

Did You Know - Stem Cell Research

Better a poor adult die (rich folks can travel to other countries to get the health care they need) than to waste a few stem cells that could be just as easily discarded. Such is the brilliant man we have elected President.

The House gave final Congressional approval on Thursday to legislation aimed at easing restrictions on federal financing of embryonic stem cell research, but Democratic leaders in both chambers conceded they were short of the votes needed to override a veto threatened by President Bush.

From an interview with Comedian Lewis Black (one of my favorites), published in Playboy Marginalia, April 2007...

"Since the President thinks stem cells are alive, I've adopted three dozen embryos, and I put them in my freezer. And every time I open it up I go 'You kids stop it!" Because I want to be a good father. I'm actually going to take them as a tax write off."

Hmm, seems like Lewis has a good point there - if they are really children, sanctified life or some such thing, shouldn't we be able to take a tax deduction the moment we know we're pregnant? Where the hell is the tax break when you need one?
