Do religious-right leaders even KNOW the Bible?

From the "Republicans Just Make Shit Up Department" of the national leadership.

From the Huffington Post
(Click on the link to read more.)

A trio of Iowa-based religious scholars penned an op-ed in a local paper this week, reminding readers that despite popular opinion, the Bible does not simply define marriage as between one man and one woman. [...]

"The debate about marriage equality often centers, however discretely, on an appeal to the Bible," the authors wrote. "Unfortunately, such appeals often reflect a lack of biblical literacy on the part of those who use that complex collection of texts as an authority to enact modern social policy."

The Bible's definition of marriage can be confusing and contradictory, noted the scholars. They stated in their column that a primary example of this is the religious book's stance on polygamy, a practice that was embraced by prominent biblical figures Abraham and David. Furthermore, Avalos, Cargill and Atkinson point out that various Bible passages mention not only traditional monogamy, but also self-induced castration and celibacy, as well as the practice of wedding rape victims to their rapists.

The wisdom of Rush Limbaugh

Ha ha ha ha ha - he said Rush Limbaugh had wisdom - ha ha ha ha.

“ We've arrived at a point where the President of the United States is going to lead a war on traditional marriage,” said traditional marriage supporter Rush Limbaugh on his show Wednesday, before heading home to his fourth traditional wife.

Saudis are Nuts

All religion is nuts. Just crazy. We might better deify the tooth fairy for all of the sense that organized religion makes. But it seems to bring comfort to a lot of people. Our government supports religion by endorsing practices and other nations that are religious.

One of our nuttiest moves is to support Saudi Arabia (but maybe we have to because of our need for their oil?). They are an Islamic nation and have some of the craziest views of any group of people on earth. You're just gonna love this story from Boing Boing...

The Telegraph reports that a Saudi court won't allow an 8-year-old girl to divorce her 58-year-old husband. The court in its wisdom ruled that the girl must reach puberty before she can pursue her case.

The Bible On Marriage

The very liberal me coming out again.

Those who oppose gay marriage on the basis of what the Christian Bible says about marriage had better be careful. Are they really ready to play by Biblical rules?

gladkov, in posting a comment over at Daily Kos (here's the link), says the following is an oldy but goodie, but it is new to me...

A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)

B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)

C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)

D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)

E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)

F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)

G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)

Here's some other stuff on marriage to keep in mind as you listen to the conservatives...

Ronald Reagan divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy, who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the wedding.

Bob Dole divorced his child's mother, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.

Newt Gingrich divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.

Rush Limbaugh: Limbaugh and his current wife Marta have 6 marriages and 4 divorces between them.

Bob Barr of Georgia: Barr had been married 3 times before he had the audacity as representative to author and push the "Defense of Marriage Act." The joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill was, "Bob, which marriage are you defending?"

And there's more of this over on Toward Equality.

For what it's worth (and I'm proud of it), the only woman I've ever been married to and I will have been married 40 years come next July.

Did You Know - Military Costs

From Raw Story, reporting on a New York Times (requires free registration) Story...

The New York Times reports that for many soldiers, "the repercussions, chaos and loneliness of wartime deployments are one of the toughest, least discussed byproducts of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Time spent away from spouses and families has "left a trail of badly strained or broken unions, many severed by adultery or sexual addictions; overburdened spouses, some of whom are reaching for antidepressants; financial turmoil brought on by rising debts, lost wages and overspending; emotionally bruised children whose grades sometimes plummet; and angst-ridden parents who at times turn on each other," writes Lizette Alvarez.

CIVIL RIGHTS -- HUSBAND OF DECEASED FIRST OPENLY GAY CONGRESSMAN DENIED PENSION BENEFITS:

From the Center for American Progress

"Gerry Studds, the nation's first openly gay congressman, pushed the country to another landmark development when he died Saturday," the Lowell Sun reports. The federal government "for the first time will deny death benefits to a congressman's gay spouse." Studds and husband Dean Hara were partnered for 15 years and married in Massachusetts in 2004. "Wives and husbands of deceased lawmakers have for years found financial comfort in their ability to collect more than half of the generous congressional pension earned by their late spouse"; Hara would have received $62,000 a year from Studds' pension program. But under the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, the federal government does not recognize state gay marriage laws like the one in Massachusetts, and federal benefits normally passed along to surviving spouses are specifically limited to "a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife." Meanwhile, criminal former Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA) and Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH), who just pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges, will continue to collect their congressional pensions while they serve their time in prison.
