One bigot's rights are another human's loss of rights.
The Supreme Court's decision on Hobby Lobby will, most likely, confirm the rights of religious people to exercise all forms of bigotry that they like. Wait and see.

Yesterday,
the U.N. released a new report on climate change. Basically, we're
fucked: According to the report, the damage from global warming is
likely to be "severe, pervasive and irreversible" and will
almost certainly lead to environmental and economic disaster,
including widespread famine in the world's poorer countries.
Letters to the editor on freedom to go armed

Can
a "good guy with a gun" shoot a "bad guy with a gun"
with 100% accuracy? The answer is obvious, as is pointed out in
today's Los Angeles Times letters to the editor... because our voices
matter:
.
Re "Gun madness in Georgia," Editorial, March 27.
The National Rifle Assn. flourishes because people believe the big lie that there are good people with guns and bad people with guns..
No. There are only people with guns. When gun-toters get angry, greedy, frightened or psychotic, they shoot other people. Mix dense populations with easy gun access, and innocent people will be maimed and killed by bullets. That's inevitable..
Apparently no body count is high enough to stop the insanity. I just pray that I, and people I care about, can make it to the end of our lives without being shot..

Suppose I'm legally carrying a concealed gun at a business when armed robbers show up. Fearing for my life, I just want to get out of the store, but the front door is the only way out..
Let's assume I can't tell who is whom by how they're dressed. How will I know which of these gunfighters to shoot as I try to get through the doors to safety? Should I just kill anyone between the door and me? Will any police officers who arrive know that I am not one of the robbers? Suppose an undercover officer "looks like" a robber and I shoot him, thinking I'm a "good guy with a gun" taking care of a "bad guy with a gun." What do I tell their families? "My bad"?.

New York gun owners fighting stringent gun control regulations
NRA Board Member Wants No Part Of What 'May Happen' At Big NY Gun Rally (Click here to read more)

.
The
head of New York state's largest firearms advocacy organization won't
attend yet another planned anti-gun control rally in Albany on
Tuesday. Thomas King told The New York Daily News that he worries
about the rhetoric at these events is becoming more "contentious
and threatening."
.
"Let
all these other groups go out and do what they want to do, because
they don't want to listen anyway," King told the newspaper. "I
just don't want to be a party to anything that may happen."
.
Numerous
large rallies have been held over the past year to voice opposition
to the SAFE Act, the package of strict new gun regulations that Gov.
Andrew Cuomo (D) signed in 2013. King is president of the New York
State Rifle & Pistol Association (NYSRPA), as well as a national
NRA board member. The NYSRPA, which bill's itself as the nation's
oldest firearms advocacy organization, is also the official
NRA-affiliated state association in New York.
.
In
the past, the group has been a key organizer of the events in Albany.
According to the Daily News, the rally on Tuesday is scheduled to
feature Donald Trump, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Rob Astorino,
and Carl Paladino -- the Republican who lost to Cuomo in 2010.

Grammatical errors DO matter. This poster has something important to say, but honestly, a little proof-reading was in order. (It's not my poster, though I DO make a lot of typos - LOL)
Red Staters - not clear on the concept.
Although I have not studied this phenomenon, my guess would be that during the heyday of America's liberalism (1960's through the 1990's). deals were made in Congress, by Democrats, to win Republican votes on social issues. These deals probably involved locating a lot of federal government projects in the deep south. This would include military bases, federal departments (CDC jumps first to mind) and boatloads of projects (Army Corps of Engineers) and so on. It would be worth investigating this theory if I had the energy (but I don't).
Dear Phone Solicitor
Dear Phone Solicitor,
I got your call again last evening as I was sitting down to dinner. It was the third or fourth such phone call I got yesterday, so when I picked up the phone and seemed rather annoyed with your call, perhaps you can make allowances.
It all started a few years ago when I responded to a call for help for residents of a disaster zone. I got online and donated a few dollars - not much, I'm sure (I can't remember exactly - but maybe $25?). Your website needed all of my information - including my phone number. You repaid me for my kindness by bundling my phone number, along with hundreds of others, and selling it to dozens of other businesses, charities and scammers. How very nice of you. Apparently my gift keeps on giving.
Now my phone rings all day long - from about 9 in the morning until about 9 at night. Usually the caller is a computer and I'm read a message about pressing 1 to speak to an operator. How about giving me the option of pressing 2 to say, "Fuck you?"
Sometimes there's a real person on the line and they start telling me about how much a donation would mean to their organization, or how I could win a million dollars if I just send them the tax payments in advance. But there's a better than even chance that the phone call is a scam or the caller's company is skimming 50% to 90% of my donation off the top. You're preying on the elderly and the poor who don't have the resistance to fend you off. How proud you must be!
I ask you - and any real humans I get to speak to - to take my name off your calling list. And you may even comply. But next month you will buy another phone list from another group, and my phone number will be on that list, because the list they are selling you contains numbers you gave them. So the calls begin anew. Or, it is some other shitty charity/business/scammer begging for my money. Beggars. Money-grubbing beggars, that is what you have become.
And when I no longer donate money to various charities and relief funds, you can blame it on the fact that I don't want my number on any more calling lists, fuck you very much.
So when I am trying to eat my dinner and you call me? And when I pick up the phone and seem abrupt by not listening to your spiel, and I ask you to please take me off your calling list? Just be grateful I don't yell, and scream and curse at you, because that is what I REALLY want to do.
Fuck you,
Bozo
P.S. I am on the Do-Not-Call list, but apparently that don't mean shit.

Gun Fail 63
Mon Mar 31, 2014 at 08:52 PM PDT
What's that noise?! Nevermind, it's just me accidentally shooting myself: GunFAIL LXIII
Six of 48 guns found by TSA agents at airports around the country last week.
.
.
Among our usual assortment of accidents, we find three gun-cleaning mishaps, two gun owners who accidentally fired into their neighbors' homes, two gun owners who thought they heard someone breaking into their homes and accidentally discharged their guns (one into a neighbor's house, and one into his own hand), two cop-involved GunFAILs, two accidental shootings between siblings, two between spouses, and one mom shot by her own 2 year old. In fact, in that case, it's worth pointing out that the woman shot had taken her gun out thinking she'd seen someone outside her home, but later put it down and went to the bathroom, leaving it out for her son to find. So that's three people who took their guns out on false alarms and ended up with bullets where they hadn't intended.
Two people also shot themselves unloading their guns last week, two were shot in hunting accidents, and one left her gun in the bathroom at church. And as always, some substantial portion of the people stopped by TSA agents at airports last week (48 this time) insisted that they had forgotten they were armed at all, even as 39 of them were carrying loaded weapons, 16 with rounds chambered. But that happens week in and week out.
.
Time marches steadily on, and so does the GunFAIL. Below the fold, last week's stories.

The group was hunting at Sportsman’s Paradise, which is privately owned pheasant hunting club on White’s Ranch. Bingham works as a guide for Sportsman’s Paradise. According to the press release, a group of pheasants flushed from cover and several of the hunters fired their weapons in different directions. Bingham, standing about 80 feet away on a small knoll, was hit. “During the flurry of shots, Craig was struck by at least 3 pellets,” the release stated. “He was hit in the left eye, hand, and thigh.” The man was taken to the clubhouse by private vehicle, and from there he was taken by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital for treatment. None of the injuries are life-threatening, but the release stated the injury to his eye will require surgery. - TEMPE, AZ, 3/28/14: An argument between a husband and wife ended in an accidental shooting at a Tempe apartment complex Friday morning. It happened at the Sunset Villas Apartments in the neighborhood of Apache Boulevard and McClintock Drive near Arizona State University. According to Sgt. Mike Pooley of the Tempe Police Department, the couple's two kids called 911 at about 6 a.m. "Initially they told us that both of their parents had been shot," Pooley told 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell. "When we got out here we found the father walking down the street. He had two guns in his hands." Pooley said the man complied with officers, putting his guns down when ordered. Police took him into custody without incident. When they went into the couple's apartment, officers found a woman who had been shot in the leg. That woman was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be OK. Pooley said detectives are getting conflicting stories about the moment leading up to the shooting. Both the man and the woman said they were wrestling for the gun, but it's not clear who had it when it discharged. The man told officers his wife shot herself. She said her husband shot her.
- JASPER CO., IA, 3/28/14: The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office says criminal charges are pending in connection with an accidental shooting. The shooting happened Friday afternoon. Deputies from the sheriff’s office and Newton police officers were called to the Skiff Hospital in Newton at 2:12 on a report of a man being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg. In an interview, the man reported he had been shot by someone else in rural Jasper County. He provided a description of two suspects and a vehicle they had left the scene in. Those descriptions were broadcast to local law enforcement and they tried to locate the vehicle. During the investigation officers determined the victim had accidentally shot himself and there was no one else involved. The investigation into the incident is continuing and charges are pending against the man. His name is not being released at this time.
- ATLANTA, GA, 3/28/14: A 16-year-old boy told police he was playing with a gun when he accidentally shot a 15-year-old girl Friday night, Atlanta police said. The girl, whose name was not released, was shot in the stomach shortly before 8 p.m. in the 700 block of Windsor Street in southwest Atlanta, Officer Kim Jones with Atlanta police said. The girl was conscious and alert while being transported to the hospital, Jones said. The alleged shooter was arrested, Jones said. His name was not released.
- HUNTSVILLE, AL, 3/28/14: Police are investigating after a 21-year-old accidentally shoots himself in the knee. It happened Friday afternoon on the 4000 block of Patton Road. Officers were called to Crestwood Hospital after a report of a shooting victim. Police say the shooting was accidental.
- SAN BERNARDINO, CA, 3/28/14: A Friday evening shooting at a crowded apartment complex sent four people to the hospital, including the suspected gunman, police said. Around 7 p.m. gunshots erupted at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of North Mountain Avenue. Friday’s victims included a woman who was shot in her chest, a man with a graze wound to his face, another man with a serious wound to his head and neck, and the suspected shooter, who shot himself in the leg while trying to flee, according to police Lt. Rich Lawhead. “We’re speculating that that happened when he was trying to get away,” Lawhead said.
- MONROE, MI, 3/28/14: A woman who thought a burglar was trying to get into her home grabbed a handgun, which accidentally discharged sending a bullet through a neighbor’s bedroom. The victim, 51, told sheriff’s deputies that she was lying on her bed in her home on Ryan’s Ridge when she heard a gunshot and her window break. The bullet went through the window, through the wall and exited the trailer. The neighbor, 53, told deputies that she heard noises and became scared thinking that someone was trying to break into her home. The woman who fired the pistol told deputies she was embarrassed and offered to pay damages to her neighbor’s property. The victim reportedly did not want to press charges, reports said.

We
now have one of the first systematic analyses not of the number of
sign-ups under Obamacare but of the number of people who were
previously uninsured but are now insured because of the law. And the
number is big: at least 9.5 million people.

Like
so many school districts across the nation which are scrambling to
figure out how to divide a pie that isn't growing nearly fast enough
to meet everyone's needs, the Philadelphia School District is in the
middle of a protracted and often acrimonious contract dispute.
.
What
distinguishes this situation in a novel, to say nothing of perilous,
way is how the district's superintendent may choose to handle the
crisis ... and why he might take that action:
.
Budget
season is closing in, the struggling Philadelphia School District has
a $14 million hole to fill this school year, and it needs $440
million in new funds for next year.
.
But
most significantly, the district has signaled it is willing to use
its "nuclear option" - invoking special powers bestowed by
the state law that created the School Reform Commission - to get what
it wants from the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.
.
Superintendent
William R. Hite Jr. has publicly said he must have work-rule changes
in order to compete with charter schools. [Emphasis added]
.
On
one level, you want to slap your forehead when you read that last
sentence. But on another level, you just knew it was heading this
way, didn't you?
.
So,
what the heck does that sentence really mean? Follow me beyond the
fold for the explanation.
First,
let's look at the nitty gritty of what "work-rule" changes
Hite was referencing. They are, to say the least, predictable:
.
The
sources said the PFT [Philadelphia Federation of Teachers] had
offered some work-rule changes at the bargaining table, but nothing
near what the district says it must have: giving principals absolute
authority over hiring and firing staff; weakening seniority; and
halting the practice of higher pay for advanced education, among
other shifts.
Shooting report
There was another shooting at Fort Hood (Texas) yesterday (4 dead), but I haven't grabbed a screen shot of an article yet - will get to that tomorrow. Meanwhile, gun control anyone?
Bachmann - still clueless on EVERYTHING
Bachmann blathers over her latest Obamacare outrage (Click here to view the original post)

Rep.
Michele Bachmann says the latest delay in the implementation of
Obamacare is just another example of "lawlessness" on the
part of President Barack Obama.
.
"Unfortunately,
it is the continuation of lawlessness from the administration,"
Bachmann told Fox News's Neil Cavuto on Wednesday. "The
administration gets to have it any way they want to have it. All
their promises about Obamacare, completely hypocritical. They didn't
come through, and now this? More of the same."
.
That's
about the delay that isn't really a delay, just a grace period for
pending applications to be completed. And once again, we've got a
Republican with reading comprehension problems.
.
For
those wondering-in §1311 of the health law, the HHS Secretary is
given the power to set dates for enrollment-so there is your legal
underpinning for any date change.
.
Of
course, that's assuming Bachmann ever bothered to read the law.

Skeptics
of the legal challenge to Obamacare's birth control mandate warn that
a ruling against it could declare open season on virtually any law
that a person or business can mount a religious-based objection to.
If Hobby Lobby can be exempt because of its owners' Christian
beliefs, Justice Elena Kagan wondered, what legal principle would
stop other corporations from seeking religious-based exemptions from
minimum wage or sex discrimination laws?
.
Chief
Justice John Roberts, expressing deep skepticism toward the
contraceptive mandate during Supreme Court arguments on Tuesday,
offered conservatives a way out of that dilemma. He contended that
"closely held" businesses, like Hobby Lobby and Conestoga
Wood, who brought the case, could be given that option without
opening the same door for publicly owned companies.
{The conservative Supremes aren't even hiding it anymore - they're just going to make their OWN laws. - Bozo)

CNN Ignores Major Climate Report, But Fox News Does Something Even Worse (Click here to read more)
By
Andrew Breiner
April 2, 2014
.
On
Monday, someone who just watched Fox News wouldn't know that a U.N.
panel's report said that "breakdown of food systems" and
"violent conflict" are likely impacts of even low levels of
climate change over the next 100 years. But MSNBC's coverage gave a
thorough look at the risks detailed in the U.N. Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on climate change impacts, as
well as the woeful state of efforts to mitigate its effects or cut
carbon.
.
The
day the report came out, CNN devoted one minute and eight seconds to
two segments giving a basic review of its contents, MSNBC spent 19
minutes and 49 seconds covering it in depth over a total of five
segments, and Fox News dedicated five minutes, mostly to attacking
the idea of climate change or of studying it at all.
.
If
a viewer was watching Fox, they learned that the main issue is
whether it's "alright for you to exhale without paying tax to
the United Nations," as Claudia Rosett of the neoconservative
Foundation for Defense of Democracies told Neil Cavuto on his show.
The short segment mocked the idea of the U.N. paying any attention at
all to climate change as long as there are other issues like Russia
and Korea to address. Neither Rosett nor Cavuto offered any possible
course of action the U.N. could take on any issue, instead throwing
out recommendations like "doing things to stop North Korea."
Both indicated they thought the U.N. would somehow profit from people
knowing about climate change. At no point did they discuss the
contents of the U.N. report or show any signs they were familiar with
it.
Looking at climate change.
IPCC - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. It was issued this past week by the UN and pointed to solid, scientific studies, that indicate radical climate change is in our future and that it's impact would be most dramatic for poor people.
