Low paid workers - Republicans love them

The more we know, the more we can do to improve things.

From Crooks and Liars

Seven of the ten lowest paying jobs in America are restaurant jobs, and the two absolute lowest paying jobs in America are restaurant: dishwashers and fast food preps and cooks are the two absolute lowest paying jobs in America. These workers earn poverty wages because the minimum wage for tipped workers at the federal level has been frozen for 22 years at $2.13 an hour, and it's the reason that food servers use food stamps at double the rate of the rest of the U.S. workforce, and have a poverty rate of three times the rest of the U.S. workforce.

We got to this place because of the power of the National Restaurant Association; we call it the other NRA. They've been named the tenth most powerful lobbying group in Congress and back in 1996 when Herman Cain was the head of the National Restaurant Association, he struck a deal with Congress saying that, "We will not oppose the overall minimum wage continuing to rise as long as the minimum wage for tipped workers stays frozen forever," and so it has for the last 22 years.

Recap...

I've said it before - one of the real ironies of the politicians hollering about supporting small business in the U.S is the fact that the big box stores (Wal*Mart, Target, Home Depot, etc.) destroy all related small business within a country mile of them. Instead of individual owners and families making a living wage and building an investment as well, they are now working for huge corporations making a meager wage. And the government subsidizes this crap with food stamps, HEAP and other welfare programs.  Just saying it again as I present more evidence of same.

We need a minimum wage that is a LIVING wage.

Conservatives continue to fight to make you more poor

More proof of the point I was making yesterday, i.e that Republicans want the lower classes to work for less money so that they can have more of the nation's wealth.  The link leads to a video.

Wal*Mart's Human Values

I quit shopping at Wal*Mart many years ago, after I became aware of how badly they treated many of their employees. I haven't bought anything at Wally World for probably 10 years now. What follows is a story posted over at Boing Boing - and by clicking on the link you can get the source and some follow up.

Around the time that the young Sam Walton opened his first stores, John Kennedy redeemed a presidential campaign promise by persuading Congress to extend the minimum wage to retail workers, who had until then not been covered by the law. Congress granted an exclusion, however, to small businesses with annual sales beneath $1 million -- a figure that in 1965 it lowered to $250,000.

Walton was furious. The mechanization of agriculture had finally reached the backwaters of the Ozark Plateau, where he was opening one store after another. The men and women who had formerly worked on small farms suddenly found themselves redundant, and he could scoop them up for a song, as little as 50 cents an hour. Now the goddamn federal government was telling him he had to pay his workers the $1.15 hourly minimum. Walton's response was to divide up his stores into individual companies whose revenues did not exceed the $250,000 threshold. Eventually, though, a federal court ruled that this was simply a scheme to avoid paying the minimum wage, and he was ordered to pay his workers the accumulated sums he owed them, plus a double-time penalty thrown in for good measure.

Wal-Mart cut the checks, but Walton also summoned the employees at a major cluster of his stores to a meeting. "I'll fire anyone who cashes the check," he told them.

Wage Chart
No need to guess here - we know how selfish some rich can be. That's how they get rich.
