Why is the NRA so obnoxious?

Rachel Maddow is bringing something very important to our attention, something that not enough of us may be aware of: Wayne LaPierre is a rodeo clown whose job it is to distract us:
"They're taking the fight to the industry. They're following the money. And if you're [Wayne LaPierre], that's very bad news indeed, right?"
"Ever wonder why everything he says seems increasingly inflammatory? It's not that he's dumb. It's not that he doesn't know what is going to upset you when you listen to a speech or a sound bite from him."
"The National Rifle Association exists to bug you. The National Rifle Association exists to make you think of him, to make you pay attention to him, and to the NRA instead of to the industry that pays the NRA to be their heat shield."

Rachel Maddow - reasoned examination of our current national debates
The following clip is long - 26 minutes. I wasn't going to watch it all, but I got hooked. Rachel's arguments are calm, reasoned and supported by strong data. So different from the biased, unsupported debate coming from so many on the far right and the ignorant drivel from news stations like CNN (which is rapidly losing most of its credibility in my book). Rachel covers a wide range of topics including updates on the anti-union movements in the mid-west, the role of Democrats in our country, and the class warfare being waged in the U.S. This is well worth your time.

Itellectual Debate: Loans to the Auto Industry?
Back in the mid-1900's manufacturing was the backbone of the American economy. The automobile industry was probably the strongest of these industries, so much so that there was a slogan that expressed it all - "as goes GM, so goes the nation."
Today, as the big three auto makers struggle to stay alive, there still might be truth in that old expression. If the auto industries are allowed to fail, it might be the death knell for the entire American super-structure. Hundreds of thousands of employees of the auto companies out of work - hundreds of thousands more in the auto-parts plants (we have a couple of big plants in the Syracuse area that manufacture components for the auto companies and I have acquaintances who work/worked there) - restaurants and stores who depend on the income from those employees - sales departments that sell cars or auto parts - financial companies that lend money for the purchase of those cars - ad infinitum.
Can we afford to take a chance that these three industries will survive if they go into bankruptcy? Can we allow bankruptcy courts to terminate the retirement benefits of hundreds of thousands of retired employees of all of the auto companies and the related business so that all of these folks are then seeking to go back to work at age 70 or even 80 when the job markets in the US are shutting down? Is it possible that bankruptcy will mean the end of these businesses?
