Thursday, the Washington Post ran a story about an actual illegal political contribution coming from a candidate’s charitable foundation leading to an IRS penalty—for Donald Trump. Friday, which candidate’s foundation was the subject of a New York Times story filled with suggestions of pay-to-play? Yup, Hillary Clinton.
The Times didn’t even bury coverage of Trump’s illegal contribution to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s group on page B47 or what have you. It simply didn't cover the story of Trump’s foundation giving money to a political group—which is illegal—and the extremely questionable explanations for just how that happened. Instead, the Times was focused on “new questions about Clinton Foundation ties to State Dept.,” which amounted to some of former President Bill Clinton’s aides asking if they could get diplomatic passports associated with his trip to North Korea to negotiate for the release of two American journalists. They didn’t get the passports, but somehow that was what was newsworthy today.
In a similar vein, on Thursday, Politico dedicated a long article to Bill Clinton’s legal staffing arrangements as a former president who also runs a major foundation, but its only mention of the Trump-Bondi story was a paragraph blurb in the middle of the “Florida Playbook.”
We see it again and again: the media dedicates extensive coverage to implying that the Clintons have done something wrong, burying the revelation that their actions were totally legal deep in the middle of a long article, while ignoring stories about actual wrongdoing by Trump.
It’s the poisonous outcome of the Clinton rules and both-sides-do-it mentality in action.
