Big-Business or the People?

As a certified liberal with my political beliefs formed in my formative years - a liberal church that taught that the Golden Rule was the most important lesson to be taken from the Bible - and a stint as a young-man facing the draft during the Vietnam War era - I simply do not understand those that put selfish interests and big-business above the needs of people. But those people are out there - forming their political beliefs in some other fashion - believing that ensuring the survival and success of big business at the expense of mankind is of paramount importance.

An article in the Washington Post recently highlights the issues that support for wealth and big business raise...

More than 900 cases alleging that government contractors and drugmakers have defrauded taxpayers out of billions of dollars are languishing in a backlog that has built up over the past decade because the Justice Department cannot keep pace with the surge in charges brought by whistle-blowers, according to lawyers involved in the disputes.

The issue is drawing renewed interest among lawmakers and nonprofit groups because many of the cases involve the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, rising health-care payouts, and privatization of government functions -- all of which offer rich new opportunities to swindle taxpayers.

Republicans are having a hard time getting their act together for the upcoming elections. Will they be able to win as a party if they are all running independently? This could be an interesting November...

From Thehill.com

At least 14 Republican members of Congress have refused to endorse or publicly support Sen. John McCain for president, and more than a dozen others declined to answer whether they back the Arizona senator.

Many of the recalcitrant GOP members declined to detail their reasons for withholding support, but Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) expressed major concerns about McCain’s energy policies and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) cited the Iraq war.

Link - More on Religion

Frequent readers here know of my disdain for organized religion. I have no problem that people want to believe in these fantasies - but I do get upset when they wish to impose their religious values on the rest of us. In particular I find fault with Christianity (I was raised in the religion so I know more about it). Not only is the Bible based on a fairy tale, but it is a bad fairy tale to boot. Note the following as one of hundreds of good questions from The Sketpic's Annotated Bible...

(1:3-5, 14-19) "Let there be light"God creates light and separates light from darkness, and day from night, on the first day. Yet he didn't make the light producing objects (the sun and the stars) until the fourth day (1:14-19). And how could there be "the evening and the morning" on the first day if there was no sun to mark them?

Pious Jerks - Number 2,876,344

I have said it over and over again - too often the religious (and the conservative) hide their criminal behavior behind their statements of piousness. They push some preconceived notions of morality on everyone else while they practice the most perverse sorts of behavior out of the eyes of their constituency. Sometimes I think that guys like this one should get DOUBLE the jail sentence because of the hypocrisy.

THE FLESH WAS WEAK: Yet again, a man has been arrested for soliciting sex with an underage girl, only to find that the object of his lust was an undercover police officer. In this case, police say, Joe Barron, 52, drove his wife's car from Plano, Texas, to Bryan with a box of condoms to meet the "13- year-old" girl after "weeks" of "sexually explicit" chats online and via cell phone. Officers arrested Barron, who immediately broke into tears and "said he was feeling guilt and shame and grief," a Bryan police spokesman said. Barron now faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, and has been asked to resign from his job -- as a minister at the Prestonwood Baptist Church, a "megachurch" in Plano that's so large, its 140-acre campus is known to more profane locals as "Six Flags Over Jesus". After his release on bail, police searched Barron's computer and found he was courting other teens, and arrested him again on six more charges. Link - Obama-Baiting: Fox News' 5 Worst Slurs

Fox News follows the Republican party line, and the newscasters on that network love to trash-talk anyone or anything that does not fit the party-think. Here's a site that points out just some of the slurs that they have forwarded on Barack Obama.

Hateful fear-mongering neo-fascist moron Michelle Malkin—who we thought had given up on Fox after her beef with Geraldo?—popped up the other day to abuse Michelle Obama. The on-screen chyron, inexplicably, referred to the candidate's wife as "Obama's Baby Mama." Because he's black, and that is a term black people use, you see. Because they have so many children out of wedlock... unlike the Obamas....
Really, it makes absolutely no fucking sense. Whatever.

Honor Killing
from The J-Walk Blog

Those crazy Muslims: Honor Killings On Rise in Iraq

At first glance Shawbo Ali Rauf appears to be slumbering on the grass, her pale brown curls framing her face, her summer skirt spread about her. But the awkward position of her limbs and the splattered blood reveal the true horror of the scene. The 19-year-old Iraqi was, according to her father, murdered by her own in-laws, who took her to a picnic area in Dokan and shot her seven times.

Her crime was to have an unknown number on her mobile phone. Her "honor killing" is just one in a grotesque series emerging from Iraq, where activists speak of a "genocide" against women in the name of religion. In the latest such case, it was reported yesterday that a 17-year-old girl, Rand Abdel-Qader, was stabbed to death last month by her father for becoming infatuated with a British soldier serving in southern Iraq.

In Basra alone, police acknowledge that 15 women a month are murdered for breaching Islamic dress codes. Campaigners insist it is a conservative figure. Violence against women is rampant, rising every day with the power of the militias. Beheadings, rapes, beatings, suicides through self-immolation, genital mutilation, trafficking and child abuse masquerading as marriage of girls as young as nine are all on the increase.

Links - Twenty Reasons to Abandon Christianity

Given the impact of Christianity on the American political scene, it is only right to consider its value. What follows is the table of contents for a very well-reasoned set of arguments as to why we should abandon Christianity.

  1. Christianity is based on fear
  2. Christianity preys on the innocent
  3. Christianity is based on dishonesty
  4. Christianity is extremely egocentric
  5. Christianity breeds arrogance, a chosen-people mentality
  6. Christianity breeds authoritarianism
  7. Christianity is cruel
  8. Christianity is anti-intellectual, anti-scientific
  9. Christianity has a morbid, unhealthy preoccupation with sex
  10. Christianity produces sexual misery
  11. Christianity has an exceedingly narrow, legalistic view of morality
  12. Christianity encourages acceptance of real evils while focusing on imaginary evils
  13. Christianity depreciates the natural world
  14. Christianity models hierarchical, authoritarian organization
  15. Christianity sanctions slavery
  16. Christianity is misogynistic
  17. Christianity is homophobic
  18. The Bible is not a reliable guide to Christ's teachings
  19. The Bible is riddled with contradictions
  20. Christianity borrowed its central myths and ceremonies from other ancient religions
