TLDR:
The only way to slow a pandemic, and stem the tide of tragic deaths from a terrifying virus, is to intentionally cause a recession.
Pro-business forces are now trying to convince us that people dying - perhaps you - is a lesser tragedy than the economy crashing.
While this is a complicated issue, and nuanced points can be made, anyone who tells you that the mall remaining open is more important than taking steps to prevent your mother from dying is an asshole.
Plus, people of all ages are dying. You almost certainly know someone at high-risk of death if they caught this virus.
That's why you should stay inside, and wash your hands. Because your life, and the lives of others, are immediately at risk.
There will ALWAYS be another financial meltdown. Corporations push for bubbles, that burst. There will NOT be additional versions of you, in the future. There is only the one, and you should be protecting it right now.
So... Fuck the economy. Make the rich people who normally protect businesses over people switch the formula for a while, in order to preserve the people, so that they can go back to taking advantage of them later.
That's how this works. Even the Republicans are going to start throwing social welfare programs. Their versions will suck... but they're coming. They have to. The other option is the death of our society, which is a non-starter for people who make billions by bleeding money out of the society. If corporations want to keep taking advantage of people, there has to be people with SOME amount of money to take advantage of.
I'm not telling you not to fear losing your income. I'm scared shitless. That's obviously going to bring hardships of it's own, and I'm not minimizing them in any way, shape, or form.
I'm just saying... fuck the economy. It will recover. Dead people won't. So take care of yourself.
