Doug Manchester donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund; Trump then nominated him to be ambassador to the Bahamas the day after Trump was officially sworn in. But then Manchester’s efforts to buy his way into a cushy ambassadorship hit a roadblock: his confirmation was held up in the Senate for two and a half years. As his Senate confirmation hung in the balance, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reached out to Manchester over email in September to ask for a $500,000 donation to the RNC. Manchester replied that his family would donate $100,000 first, and once the RNC helped push through his confirmation, he would donate the remaining amount.
Doug Manchester should never have been considered for the ambassadorship to the Bahamas in the first place. It’s an absolute disgrace that rich megadonors can buy their way into political power, but for the RNC to actively solicit a donation from Manchester as his nomination was pending is an entirely different level of corruption. Rather than stand up for the rule of law, Republicans have chosen to emulate their Dear Leader's corruption.
