1. Pass massive tax cuts aimed at rich people because those rich people will use the money to invest in businesses, hire people, grow the economy and balance the budget on the increased economic productivity. (If anyone points out this has never happened before, pinky-promise that this time is different.)
2. When budget deficits explode out of control, become worried about long-term effects of structural budget problems. (If anyone points out that this was all predicted by critics of the tax cuts, accuse them of being anti-growth as well as suffering from class-bias.)
3. Insist that the only solution for balancing the long-term budget is massive cuts to programs that support middle-class, working-class and poor and vulnerable people. These include obvious targets like welfare and housing, but also include increasing the costs of Medicare expenses, reducing Social Security benefits, and even of eliminating “hidden” subsidies like home mortgage interest deductions that significantly reduce middle-class homeowners’ taxes. (If anyone points out that such cuts could be rendered moot by returning to the tax situation pre-tax cut levels, reiterate responses 1 and 2.)
4. Repeat.
