A civil war has erupted between Trump Republicans and the rest of the Party -- exemplified not just in Trump’s unwillingness to back Paul Ryan and John McCain in their primary contests, but also in the ouster this week of Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp at the hands of a candidate backed by the party establishment. “It was about sending a message,” said Huelskamp. “’They came after me to get a scalp.'"
Meanwhile, challengers in key Senate battlegrounds are aligning themselves with Trump. "What we are seeing here is the Trump wave," said Kelli Ward, a former state senator seeking to overtake McCain. "The tsunami … is now crashing over so many people who have been in Washington for way too long." Wisconsin businessman Paul Nehlen is taking on Paul Ryan in the primary there, accusing him of undermining Trump. Florida businessman Carlos Beruff is taking on Rubio in the primary in Florida, questioning Sen. Marco Rubio's loyalty to Trump.
Other Republicans in tough reelection races are distancing themselves from Trump. Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman released an ad Thursday saying of Trump, "I don't care for him much."
If elected president, Trump will purge the Republican Party of adversaries and replace them with loyalists.
