Rubio: “Federal Judge Allowing Minorities To Vote Like Regular People Ruins Our Democracy”

A federal judge on Friday struck down a string of Wisconsin voting restrictions passed by the Republican-led legislature and ordered the state to revamp its voter identification rules, finding that they disenfranchised minority voters. U.S. District Judge James Peterson said the requirements that Wisconsin voters show either a photo identification or go through a special petition process had unfairly burdened minorities and needed to be reformed or replaced before the November presidential election. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said in a tweet that he was “disappointed in the decision by an activist federal judge” and expected to file an appeal.

“We’re way past the point of being able to go on personal crusades like this one,” Rubio told The Washington Post. “Being a federal judge is an honor, but at the same time carries an incredible responsibility. To be a judge means to distribute justice impartially and fairly, and what’s most important here – to distribute it while maintaining the protection of law and U.S. citizens on one’s mind at all times. And when we say ‘U.S. citizens,’ it means exactly that – Americans. It doesn’t mean you should allow someone who’s been an American for only several months or weeks to have a say in who gets to be the President of the United States.”

“And let’s get one thing straight – I’m all for respecting decisions made by lawmakers. But, when a state like Wisconsin attempts to protect its citizens, which is to say, genuine Americans, from the influence of illegal immigrants and other minorities who do not wish this country well, and a federal judge disputes that, well then, what’s the point of our democracy?” Rubio inquired. The Wisconsin Gov. also added that, despite his rhetoric on this particular matter, “minorities are more than welcome to be in America,” but that that’s also a process that “takes time and should be taken very seriously.”

Rubio said, “Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against minorities. After all, our ancestors were minorities in this country at one point. But, we need to be smart about this. While we allow them to stay here and give them time to become true, legitimate citizens of this country, we must protect the ones who already are.” He added, “And this is not something we want to be taking a risk with. For all intents and purposes, I want to believe all immigrants who come to this country in search of a new life mean it well, mean all of us well. But, we live in perilous times and we have to prepare for the worst.”

“And that’s exactly what the state of Wisconsin is trying to do,” he said. “Except, there seems to be a federal judge out there who doesn’t get it. He seems to think that you’re a full-fledged American from the moment you set foot on American soil. Well, it just doesn’t work that way. And until that particular law changes, we need protection for true Americans because they’re – we’re – the only ones who get to decide who we choose to lead us. And by denying us the right to choose our own leadership, Judge Peterson is effectively ruining the very principles of democracy that are the foundation of this great country,” Rubio concluded.
