Six of 51 guns discovered by TSA agents at airports around the country from 8/14 through 8/20/15.
After a relatively light week, we're back up over 30 incidents reported, and as usual, self-inflicted gunshot wounds are the overwhelming plurality. Fifteen of the 33 stories included at "press time" involved people who accidentally shot themselves. And seven victims were accidentally shot by family members or significant others, including two parents shot and killed by their pre-schoolers, one in Guns Everywhere Georgia, and one in Guns Pretty Much Everywhere Alabama. Ten minors were themselves the victim of accidental shootings last week, as well, ranging in age from 19 months to 17 years old.
Special shout-outs this week start with the cops in Kenosha, Wisconsin, who in attempting to save a woman from a dog that was attacking her, accidentally shot her with a Taser. You've got to wonder whether she was a little worried, then, when they went to Plan B: leveling a firearm at the offending dog. She might well have figured that lightning couldn't possibly strike twice. But then again, this wasn't lightning.
Dishonorable mention to the guy who accidentally shot and killed his presumably very, very close friend while adjusting the gun he had stashed in his (own) underwear. And also to the Weatherford, Texas parent who defied his child's high school's posted prohibition of firearms, and proceeded to accidentally discharge and thereafter drop his pistol to the floor during a freshman orientation event. Of course, he only brought the gun as protection, in case some nefarious nogoodnik chose to flout the law and school rules by bringing a gun with evil intent, as nefarious nogoodniks are wont to do. He was, of course, a good guy with a gun, who chose to flout the law and school rules by bringing a gun with what amounted to merely butterfingered intent, which we know can't truly hurt anyone, as it's done out of love.
This week's full compilation appears below the fold. As full compilations are wont to do.
- WEST NORRITON, PA, 8/16/15: A non-fatal shooting that occurred in the 1800 block of W. James Street Sunday was self-inflicted and accidental, according to a police incident report. Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:50 PM and had to break a window out of a rear door to gain entry into the residence. The male victim told police that he was cleaning his .357 magnum revolver after consuming half a bottle of whiskey and accidentally shot himself. The bullet reportedly passed through the victim’s left thigh and exited through his knee before striking a chair and landing on the floor. Plymouth Ambulance arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Paoli Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police collected the gun, five live rounds, the spent bullet and its casing and logged them into evidence.
- COFFEE CO., GA, 8/16/15: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that a mother who was shot in the head by her 4-year-old child has died. According to a report, 25-year-old Dorothy Reardean died just after 5 PM Monday. Officials said the shooting happened around 5 PM Sunday. The GBI said the Reardean and her son were in a car parked in front of their home on Cutter Road near Douglas. They said that her 4-year-old son found a gun in the car, and thought it was a toy. That's when he picked it up and pulled the trigger. Rearden was flown to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition until she died.
- LAGRANGE, GA, 8/17/15: A man was in stable condition this morning at Atlanta Medical Center after accidentally shooting himself in the chest while cleaning one of his guns. The man told LaGrange police officers he was cleaning an Amadero Rossi S.A. .38 Special revolver on the patio of his home in the 100 block of Alton Drive. He said he thought it was unloaded and began wiping it down when he dropped it, which he believed caused the hammer of the gun to cock back. The victim told officers he began cleaning it again and that is when the gun fired and struck him in the upper chest. According to police, the bullet exited his back. The victim admitted to police he drank seven beers, but when officers spoke with him they said he did not seem impaired. The victim’s wife drove him to West Georgia Medical Center around 12:30 this morning. Police took custody of the revolver.
- MACON, GA, 8/17/15: A man accidentally shot himself in the hand Monday afternoon in the 3300 block of Houston Avenue in Macon. Earl Pittman told a Bibb County deputy that when he put a pistol in his pocket to take inside his job, the gun went off striking his thumb. The bullet exited out of the back of his hand, according to a Bibb County incident report. The gun did not belong to Pittman, but to a coworker who the deputy was unable to reach so the gun was confiscated, the report states. The deputy determined there was no foul play and Pittman took himself to the hospital for treatment.
- WATSONVILLE, CA, 8/18/15: A 27-year-old Watsonville man was accidentally shot in the arm at his home on the 200 block of Cambridge Drive in Watsonville on Tuesday. The man drove himself to Watsonville Community Hospital and was being treated about 10:30 AM, said Santa Cruz County sheriff’s Lt. Kelly Kent. At the hospital, the man initially told authorities that he had been running on the Pajaro River levee near Lakeview Road. He said he was approached by a person and shot in the arm, Kent said. As deputies investigated, they determined the story was a lie, Kent said. The man then recanted and said it was an accidental shooting at his home. It was not immediately clear whether shot was self-inflicted or if someone else accidentally shot him.
- OKTAHA, OK, 8/18/15: The Muskogee County sheriff said a member of the group guarding an Oktaha gun shop accidentally shot himself Tuesday. Sheriff Charles Pearson said the man dropped his gun and a bullet hit him in the arm. The sheriff did not identify the man or offer any other details about what happened. The group of armed citizens and veterans is standing guard outside the Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear store after the owners said they received death threats from all over the world for putting up a sign saying Muslims weren't welcome. "I saw several of those gentlemen out there yesterday," Pearson said. "The way they were holding their weapons, with the fingers on the triggers, you can tell a couple of these gentlemen have no idea about weapons safety. It's like the Clampetts have come to town," Sheriff Pearson told muskogeenow.com. The sheriff told News On 6 on Monday that his office is monitoring the situation. "Everybody is entitled to say what they feel, and the other people are entitled to tell them how they feel about their opinion. When that gets out of control, that's where we come in. The only thing that I ask, if they are true patriots, that when the threats do come or the undesirables do show up, call us and allow us to handle it," he said. MORE: A Checotah man shot himself in the wrist while "defending" a survival gear store and shooting range in Oktaha, said Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson. Terrence Veninga, 57, was volunteering Tuesday morning as an armed guard with several other self-described patriots at the Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear store and gun range, a self-professed Muslim-free store. His gun, an old Colt .45 revolver, fell from its bucket holster and discharged. The bullet hit him in the wrist, Pearson said. Veninga was guarding the store because of alleged threats against it, Pearson said. Pearson said the gun-safety prowess of the volunteers guarding the store concerned him.
- OWASSO, OK, 8/18/15: A man was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on Tuesday, after an argument goes terribly wrong. We're told three people were inside a home near East 100th and North 129th in Owasso, when a verbal argument broke out between Robert Hart and another man. Police say Hart went and got a gun and a struggle ensued. During this time, Hart ended up shooting himself in the leg. Still, the struggle didn't end there. The other man shoved Hart's head into a microwave. This caused Hart to fire his gun again. The other man was then able to wrestle the gun away from Hart. Police say the other two men were not seriously hurt, but one guy was possibly grazed by a bullet. Hart faces multiple charges including reckless conduct with a firearm and shooting with intent to kill.
- SAN ANGELO, TX, 8/18/15: At approximately 2 PM Tuesday afternoon, San Angelo Police were dispatched to 1802 Beacon St. after a 13-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his “the lower extremities.” A juvenile male in the same house, who was around the same age, accidentally discharged a firearm that caused the injury, said Detective Gaeta. The detective also said there were four underage children in the home at the time of the incident; however, the owner of the home wasn’t present, nor the gun owner. Luckily, no one else was hurt. “It was an accident, and there are no charges pending at this point in time,” Gaeta added. The injured boy was taken to one of the area hospitals, but police did not want to disclose which one, nor did they want to disclose the type of firearm used because of the nature of the incident. Gaeta did say though that the wound was a non-life threatening injury.
- HOOVER, AL, 8/18/15: A 2-year-old boy shot and killed his father in what police in Hoover, Ala., are calling a horrible accident. Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector says investigators have all but ruled out suicide and other scenarios in the shooting. Rector says an autopsy is being conducted Wednesday on the 31-year-old man, who was shot once in the head in an apartment on Tuesday afternoon. No one else was inside other than the toddler. Rector says there's no sign of an intruder or a self-inflicted wound, and police know there was a semiautomatic pistol in the apartment. Rector says it's not difficult for a 2-year-old boy to pull a trigger on that kind of weapon, and investigators believe that's what happened. The victim's name hasn't been released.
- ATHENS, AL, 8/18/15: A man who accidentally shot himself in the groin Tuesday night in Limestone County has undergone surgery at Huntsville Hospital. - RANCHO CORDOVA, CA, 8/18/15: A 10-year deputy veteran assigned as an officer with the Rancho Cordova Police Department accidentally fired one shot at another officer while they both responded to a call early Tuesday morning, officials said. The shooting happened after the officer exited an apartment complex on Point East Drive into a dimly lit enclosed stairwell. He encountered a person he believed was holding a weapon, but it was actually an officer, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said. It was then that the officer fired one shot at the person, who turned out to be the second responding uniformed officer, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said. The second officer was not injured as the round missed him and lodged into the stairwell door frame. Both were called to the 11200 block of Point East Drive in Rancho Cordova shortly before 5 AM Tuesday when a man reported hearing someone taunting him near his home in the area. The responding officer determined that the person in question was intoxicated, but did not pose a threat to others or himself before he encountered the second officer. The officer has been removed from his assignment until investigators can develop more information into the circumstances of the shooting, officials said.

On Saturday August 22, 2015 the juvenile was pronounced dead by the on staff medical doctor while in Macon GA at the Macon Medical Center with an autopsy pending with the GBI Crime Lab. Atravius Lee Mizell, 17 of Thomaston was also charged with Two Counts of entering Auto in connection to this case as well. The guys were best friends. There were no hostile intentions.” Officers were dispatched to the apartment around 1:36 AM. They found two rounds of ammunition in the gun’s chamber, Babcock said.
