In these states where citizens are legally allowed to openly carry guns, a psychopath could stroll around society openly carrying the very weapon they would eventually use to commit mass murder. And the worst part is, no matter how many people might call the police to report someone who “looks suspicious carrying a gun,” in a state where it’s legal to do so, there’s almost nothing the police can do about it. Just look at a story out of Mississippi where an open carry gun fanatic is apparently purposely going around terrorizing citizens who are out shopping by loading and racking (the motion of sliding the forend back to pop out the shell) a shotgun they’re carrying in places like Walmart, Krispy Kreme and Winn Dixie. According to WMC: According to authorities, the two men walked into the Walmart on Highway 49 around 8 p.m. Witnesses said the man holding the shotgun was actively loading and racking the firearm. Walmart does not have a policy about guns inside its stores. “If I were in a situation where I’m in the store shopping with my family and I see an individual loading a 12 gauge, and racking it, I’m not coming to the conclusion this is good,” said Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania. “While the actions of these two men are sanctioned by state laws, what they did negatively impacted our community.” The stupidity of all of this just gets overwhelming sometimes. To sit here and watch a police chief admit that there’s someone out there who’s going around loading and unloading a shotgun, seemingly with the purposeful intent to taunt or terrorize those around them, and there’s nothing they can do about it because this behavior is protected by law just gives me a headache. “You don’t have to look hard in today’s media and see demonstrations of very violent acts. And if I had been in the store last night watching someone load a shotgun and rack it, that’s not normal. And that usually precipitates a violent act,” Papania went on to say to a reporter.
