Today, in ridiculous arguments:
Here’s the thing. Automobiles are designed to HELP YOU when things go wrong. Fall asleep at the wheel? Hit a patch of black ice? Find a truck swerving into your lane when there’s nothing you can do about it?
.
Cars HELP YOU. They have antilock brakes and air bags and lane departure warning systems and indicator lights and seat belt pre-tensioners and crumple zones and lots and lots of other stuff that should HELP YOU survive.
.
And they work. Despite the fact that Americans drive millions more miles per year today than they did even 20 years ago, many of them while texting (!!), deaths per passenger mile driven are going DOWN in this country. More driving of safer cars = lots more living people.
.
Guns not only don’t assist you in trying to survive an accident or a mistake, they accentuate errors and make them that much more deadly. In addition, gun advocates seem determined the assure that even simple steps to make guns safer – mandatory gun safes and gun locks; mandatory training and registration, etc., – can never be implemented. It would be as if we were all driving Model Ts at 90 mph (while texting), insisting that any regulation was an infringement of our rights.
.
Oh, and before you make the stupid “gun ownership is a right” claim, SO IS VOTING. Yet lots of gun rights advocates have no problem regulating the hell out of voting.
