The Wolfeboro, N.H. police commissioner, who has been under fire for calling President Obama the n-word, resigned on Monday morning, WMUR and the Washington Post reported.
.
After a Wolfeboro resident complained to the town manager that she heard Copeland use the racial slur when referencing Obama, the commissioner confirmed that he used the n-word and refused to apologize.
.
"I believe I did use the 'N' word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse (sic)," Copeland wrote in an email to the resident, obtained by WMUR. "For this, I do not apologize -- he meets and exceeds my criteria for such."
.
Residents demanded that Copeland resign, and the three-member police commission was set to meet to discuss the matter.
.
Mitt Romney, who owns a vacation home in Wolfeboro, has also called on Copeland to resign.
.
"The vile epithet used and confirmed by the commissioner has no place in our community," Romney said. "He should apologize and resign."

[ed - I don't believe in forcing politically correct speech on people - but I also believe that some vulgarities, uttered in public by public officials, can lead us to the conclusion that those officials might not perform their duties without prejudice. Folks were right to ask for his resignation.}
