Corporations are screwing America

Why don't corporations have a conscience? Why don't the leaders have a commitment to working with the nations and the people of the world? Why don't the corporate leaders realize that by working together we could have a better life for everyone? Pay higher wages. Provide benefits. Pay taxes.

We have a grocery chain in our area, Wegmans, based out of Rochester, NY that does exactly that. Year in and year out a national magazine rates them as one of the top two or three places to work in the country. I recently heard from one of their employees in our area that sheds light on exactly the issue I raise in the first paragraph. One of his parents became deathly ill - he requested time off to help out - Wegmans gave him regular PAID time off to care for his parents. A Wegmans representative came to his home on several occasions with food and supplies to help out the family. The employer was there for him.

Wegmans, as a part of their employee benefits program, provides their workers with scholarship money just a few months after they begin working there. It is a company with a conscience - a company that wants to play a role in making life better for its employees. THIS is what we need more of in this country.

Discliamer: I have absolutely no connection with Wegmans whatsoever. I never worked there and I'm sure their employee benefits are more extensive than what I've listed - I'm just an outside observer. I grew up in Rochester and watched them rise from just a couple of stores to a chain dominating most of the northeast. I'm proud to say that my wife and I have done about 90% of our grocery shopping at Wegmans for decades. And we will continue to support them as long as they continue to support our community.
