Big business and the environment

I think what gets to me the most about big business is the manner in which it completely distances itself from the people it serves. Business itself has no self-sustaining life - it is purely a function of humans. It exists to serve us. We own the businesses, we work in the businesses, we buy from the businesses. So why, oh why, do these people who run them lose their own humanity? Why do they rob from us, cheat us, pollute our earth, and lie to us? At what point in their existence do the CEOs, CFOs, and all of the other corporate leaders lose their dignity, their self-respect and their consciences? I can't figure it out.
