A religion worth following

I watched a movie a couple of days ago that got me thinking about Christianity again (lots of things do because it is so prevalent in our every day lives here in America). And I started to think that maybe it's not religion that is so bad, but it is WHAT we worship.

Let's analyze - in Christianity, God existed, created man in his own image, hated us so much that he eventually killed (drowned) everyone on earth except for Noah, then came to earth as the child of a woman he raped, had himself killed, then returned as a zombie, rose up to heaven (wherever that is) and continues to leer down at us. He has the power to grant the world peace and freedom from hunger and the nasty elements, but chooses not to do that. He seems to revel in watching us suffer so that we will come begging for help. He has a HUGE ego.

Why did he do all of this? Because he wants to be worshiped. He wants us to adore him, and fear him, so that he can reward us (big hero guy) or punish us (we be bad). You see? It's all about HIM. He is being totally selfish - he wants you to be his bitch or he'll burn you badly. According to Christianity  we are nothing but his toys.

But perhaps, just perhaps, there is a religion that makes more sense. In this religion we are all an accident of the universe - and because of that there is good and there is evil in this world. It's random. But there is, walking among us, someone who represents the very best in humankind. His works are told in hundreds of books, movies and stories.

His parents were killed when he was a child, but from the time that he first came to adulthood, he did good things. He fought for the poor and the downtrodden - he fights evil at every turn. He has even died and been resurrected to continue to fight to save us. I saw this exact story told in the movie I just watched.

Who is it that we should worship? It's the goddam BATMAN. He does not ask to be worshiped - he fights for US. The focus is on US. He is not selfish, begging for your praise. He hides his true identity (though you can find out who he really is if you read some of the religious tomes about his work) so that you will not seek him out for praise or special favors. He will not punish you if you are good - he strikes fear only into the hearts of those who are evil.

Yes, I see little reason not to push this new religion - one for which I am offering the name - Batmanity - to give praise to a hero who seeks no personal glory, who does not demand that we kneel before him - but brings pure goodness and love to the people of Gotham.

All hail Lord Batman!
