A cornered animal

The NRA has come out with two ads now attacking the secret service protection given to President Obama's daughters, claiming that they only want equal protection for their own children. As Jon Stewart said a couple of nights ago, after implying that the ads were malicious, the NRA would also like the ability to veto laws and run the largest military in the world.

In fact, I think the ads were done because the NRA feels cornered. They are under big pressure from their corporate sponsors who make big profits on big guns (polls show the general membership of the NRA is 80% in favor of some gun regulation) from one side, and from the government and citizens on the other who are demanding gun control. The NRA is a wounded, cornered animal and they are using their only weapon - stockpiles of cash - to try to fight their way out.

They have no good arguments for advocating no new gun laws and so they are trying to make the argument personal. Name calling and buying politicians has worked well in the past, will it work for them this time?
