I ran into an acquaintance at our local mall today and we sat down to have some coffee. I knew his political beliefs ran contrary to mine, so I made up my mind not to bring up the topic. But as we sat there, he said, "I'm keeping my mouth shut on political issues today."
And within 30 seconds he began to spout off. If only he'd wanted to argue issues, I would have listened - maybe even commented - but instead, he gave me his reason for voting for one particular local candidate. His rationale? "He's a beady-eyed little asshole."
Now, how do you argue with someone whose reason's for voting are reduced to name calling and vitriol?
I simply said, "You said you weren't going to bring up politics, and then you start in. Quite the disconnect with your thinking there."
And so many in the media are asking why the two sides can't work together. The answer is simple - there are too many simple-minded people out there who reduce the issues to personal attacks and the politicians just follow their lead. What we need are politicians who will instruct, and lead, not leaders who reflect back these same baser instincts.
I wish us all luck.
We STILL don't know why Mitt won't release his tax returns - do you really trust a guy who's hiding the facts on whether he's paid his fair share of taxes or not?
There are bigger problems with our health care system in America than Government mandating that everyone be covered.

Understanding the principles that underlie the Republican candidates.
Mitt Romney has very little concept of what middle class/lower class life is like.
Picking judges for the Supreme Court is an important job for the President and the court is already leaning against a liberal interpretation of the Constitution.
Racism is still an issue - let's just hope that it's an issue for a very small minority of Americans because it is just plain unfair.
