Venture capitalist Thomas Perkins, not to be confused with the equally befuddled, dishonest, and hyperbolic religio-wingnut figure, compared, in a letter to the editor of The Wall Street Journal, America's 1 percent to the Jews of Nazi Germany:

In a time when the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, when the unemployed are denied unemployment benefits and the sick are denied medical care and everyone is denied a job, Perkins wrote of "a rising tide of hatred of the successful one percent," He claimed, "In the Nazi area it was racial demonization, now it is class demonization."

Perkins concluded that, "This is a very dangerous drift in our American thinking. Kristallnacht was unthinkable in 1930; is its descendent 'progressive' radicalism unthinkable now?"

From this, you would expect the 1 percent to be thrown into concentration camps almost immediately. But nothing could be further from the truth, and the parallels with Nazi thinking are nonexistent. Perkins, not to put too fine a point on it, lied through his teeth.

Actually, Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist Party were eager to climb into bed with the German 1 percent, other than rich Jews, of course, whose money could simply be confiscated later. In fact, it has been argued that without support from rich German industrialists, Hitler would never have risen to power in 1933. And not only did Hitler have financial supporters in Germany but in the United States.

I saw in the news today that Gabby Gifford's PAC to fund the fight for gun control has drawn the most cash of any similar action committees. Here's hoping she can have the kind of success Jim Brady had after the failed attempt on the life of Ronald Reagan. Meanwhile, we're still shooting each other at a pretty good clip - pun intended.

When economists talk about how a market "regulates itself," what they mean is that markets reach an equilibrium between supply and demand..
This says nothing about whether or not this equilibrium will be a good thing for society. It simply states that if consumers choose what to buy and producers choose what to sell and how to produce it, the market settles on a product distribution and prices.

Lately, many people I know have argued that "free markets" mean something more. They see markets as ethically right or ethically moral, meaning pursuit of profit always somehow leads to a greater good.

Unfortunately, morality isn't built into markets.

Markets were fine with child labor and slavery. Both were viewed simply as cheap sources of labor. It wasn't until people fought against child labor and slavery that these things became unacceptable in a market (at least in most Western countries).

On Thursday, conservative political author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza was indicted on fraud charges under campaign finance law. He is being charged with using straw donors to funnel money to a political candidate that is a close friend during the 2012 election. The candidate is widely believed to be Wendy Long, a repugican Senate candidate that ran a losing campaign against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY.)

Under federal campaign finance law, individual donors are only allowed to donate up to $2,500 to a candidates campaign. Federal prosecutors are stating that D'Souza donated a total of $20,000 to a candidate's campaign. He had other people donate in their names and then reimbursed those people himself. Therefore, he was able to provide money to his fried who was running and make it seem like others were contributing to skirt campaign finance laws. He is charged with making illegal donations and making false statements.
Just when you think the GOP can't display any more hate for the middle class, they surprise you...

John Boehner has often said in the questioning and criticism of his lack of leadership in the House, What are the Republican standards for judging the lower chamber? And he's proudly boasted that his chamber should not be judged on how many bills it's passed, but rather on how many bills it's repealed.

Try and try as the GOP might, they've tried some 46 or more times to repeal Obamacare. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. They've worked arduously on curtailing the effects of Dodd-Frank and most other financial regulatory issues. These are protections from abuse of the super rich banking institutions on the backs and shoulders of the masses.

So what's the latest on their agenda? Just look at this, as reported by Reuters:

(Reuters) - The Republican Party is expected to approve a resolution this week, calling for repeal of an Obama administration law that is designed to crack down on offshore tax dodging..
In what would be the party's first appeal to scrap the law - the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) - a panel was slated to vote at the Republican National Committee's (RNC) winter meetings in Washington, likely approving the resolution on Friday, according to party members driving the repeal effort.
What's this mean? The Republicans want to allow rich individuals and wealthy companies to continue to harbor money in off-shore banks without subjecting these monies to federal taxes.

Rep. Michael Grimm didn't know whom he was dealing with on Tuesday when he threatened to throw NY1 reporter Michael Scotto off the US Capitol balcony and "break you in half. Like a boy."

The National Review magazine, longstanding house news organ of the establishment right, is facing a lawsuit that could shutter the publication permanently. According to The Week, a suit by a climate scientist threatens to bankrupt the already financially shaky publication and its website, the National Review Online (NRO).

Scientist Michael Mann is suing the Review over statements made by Canadian right-wing polemicist and occasional radio stand-in for Rush Limbaugh, Mark Steyn. Steyn was writing on the topic of climate change when he accused Mann of falsifying data and perpetuating intellectual fraud through his research.

Steyn went on to quote paid anti-climate science operative Rand Simberg - an employee of the right-wing think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute - who compared Mann to Penn State's convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky.
