The status of our mental health care system

Prior to the 1960's we had a faulty mental health care system in the U.S. - we confined people to state mental hospitals if they were the least bit odd - many committed to the hospital by relatives. Getting released was difficult and the system was abused.

As usual, we over-reacted. We dumped all of those people on to the streets and they became our criminals and our homeless. Today we hospitalize very few of those who need it and criminalize many of the rest.

We could do a better job if we worked at it for the betterment of us all.
